05:35.576 --> 05:38.098 [SPEAKER_01]: Let's take a look again at Genesis 1, 26.27. 05:38.158 --> 05:42.302 [SPEAKER_01]: Let us make man in our image after our likeness. 05:42.562 --> 05:44.985 [SPEAKER_01]: The word image here is the Hebrew word, Selam. 05:46.606 --> 05:53.873 [SPEAKER_01]: And other than in Genesis, where it always refers to the image of God, it's only ever used in that context, in every other place that it appears. 05:53.913 --> 05:57.696 [SPEAKER_01]: It always refers to a statue or a little figurine. 05:58.665 --> 05:59.445 [SPEAKER_01]: a physical model. 06:00.105 --> 06:01.886 [SPEAKER_01]: For example, number 33, 52. 06:01.906 --> 06:12.948 [SPEAKER_01]: Then you show drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you and destroy all their figured stones and destroy all their metal images, sell them, and demolish all their high places. 06:13.668 --> 06:17.408 [SPEAKER_01]: These images can also be called idle. 06:17.508 --> 06:18.469 [SPEAKER_01]: That's a different word in Hebrew. 06:19.269 --> 06:20.209 [SPEAKER_01]: But this gives us a clue. 06:20.629 --> 06:26.710 [SPEAKER_01]: In the ancient world, images or idols were set up to communicate something about the God that they imaged. 06:28.820 --> 06:34.687 [SPEAKER_01]: like an owl for wisdom or a bull for strength, a lion for courage. 06:35.227 --> 06:41.615 [SPEAKER_01]: Every pagan God had some special superpower, some attribute that they idol needed to reflect. 06:43.228 --> 06:50.050 [SPEAKER_01]: But here, the Bible says that humanity itself is created to represent or reflect or image God. 06:50.090 --> 06:53.091 [SPEAKER_01]: But the God that we represent is not one among many. 06:53.372 --> 06:55.912 [SPEAKER_01]: He doesn't have a gimmick or a power. 06:56.853 --> 06:58.613 [SPEAKER_01]: He doesn't just have one main attribute. 06:59.094 --> 07:02.015 [SPEAKER_01]: But the true and living God has many, many, many attributes. 07:03.055 --> 07:11.218 [SPEAKER_01]: So one of the ways that theologians explain what it means to bear the image of God is that to bear the image of God is to bear God's communicable attributes. 07:12.310 --> 07:14.551 [SPEAKER_01]: and not his in communicable attributes. 07:15.131 --> 07:15.791 [SPEAKER_01]: Let me define those. 07:15.871 --> 07:20.752 [SPEAKER_01]: It's just a fancy way of saying that we are kind of like God but that we're not exactly like God. 07:21.652 --> 07:29.874 [SPEAKER_01]: God's communicable attributes are things like love and justice, patience, mercy, wisdom, truthfulness, and holiness. 07:31.054 --> 07:39.776 [SPEAKER_01]: Part of what it means to be made in the image of God and the likeness of God is that He has granted us some measure of these attributes that He alone has supremely. 07:43.303 --> 07:47.665 [SPEAKER_01]: And conversely, we're not God because we don't share in his in-communicable attributes. 07:47.685 --> 07:50.206 [SPEAKER_01]: See, sure, the attributes that God alone has. 07:50.906 --> 07:53.367 [SPEAKER_01]: So God alone is omnipotent, all powerful. 07:53.447 --> 07:55.668 [SPEAKER_01]: God alone is omniscient, all knowing. 07:55.848 --> 07:58.529 [SPEAKER_01]: God alone is omnipresent everywhere, all at once. 07:59.149 --> 08:07.232 [SPEAKER_01]: And only God is independently self-existent, uncreated, sovereign, eternal, unchangeable. 08:09.308 --> 08:11.569 [SPEAKER_01]: So that's part of what it means to image God. 08:11.609 --> 08:18.514 [SPEAKER_01]: But there's a second reason for the word cellam here that is quite deliberate and subversive. 08:19.975 --> 08:23.617 [SPEAKER_01]: The language here is chosen quite on purpose. 08:24.117 --> 08:33.083 [SPEAKER_01]: Because the language of image and likeness was widely known and widely used in the ancient Mesopotamian world, but only ever of kings. 08:34.103 --> 08:34.604 [SPEAKER_01]: Here's a quote. 08:35.400 --> 08:41.041 [SPEAKER_01]: from a letter to the Assyrian king, S. Arhadon, these are written, this is a letter from his priests. 08:42.742 --> 08:45.622 [SPEAKER_01]: The father of my Lord, the king, is the very image of Bell. 08:46.603 --> 08:49.463 [SPEAKER_01]: The king, the Lord of the lands is the image of Shamaish. 08:50.424 --> 08:54.224 [SPEAKER_01]: O king of the inhabited world, you are the image of Marduk. 08:55.185 --> 09:04.487 [SPEAKER_01]: These are three different gods that are being invoked here, and the king is exercising his authority and in each of these realms, and he represents whichever god is relevant to whatever power he's exercising. 09:05.640 --> 09:11.182 [SPEAKER_01]: Likewise, in Egypt, the Pharaohs were called the image of Amun, the likeness of Ra. 09:12.963 --> 09:23.908 [SPEAKER_01]: And so to be made in the image of God is to reflect the glory of that God, and then to claim the authority and the power and the privilege of that God. 09:24.368 --> 09:28.670 [SPEAKER_01]: The reason why the Pharaoh must be obeyed is because he alone is made in the image of Ra. 09:29.130 --> 09:31.111 [SPEAKER_01]: And to disobey Pharaoh is to disobey Ra. 09:34.037 --> 09:37.739 [SPEAKER_01]: And so here, the Bible a three-line poem. 09:43.002 --> 09:47.405 [SPEAKER_01]: So God created man, Adam, in his own image. 09:48.105 --> 09:53.909 [SPEAKER_01]: In this very first line of this three-line poem, the Bible says that all humanity, man here, does not mean male. 09:54.029 --> 09:56.090 [SPEAKER_01]: This is talking about humanity, mankind. 09:56.750 --> 10:01.193 [SPEAKER_01]: All humanity is made in the image of God, not just kings. 10:03.203 --> 10:05.004 [SPEAKER_01]: in the image of God he created him. 10:05.784 --> 10:13.488 [SPEAKER_01]: This reinforces that it's not just humanity as a total whole in general, but that every individual is made in the image of God. 10:14.029 --> 10:15.789 [SPEAKER_01]: Male and female he created them. 10:16.570 --> 10:19.831 [SPEAKER_01]: This sentence is unparalleled in any ancient culture. 10:20.532 --> 10:26.555 [SPEAKER_01]: The Bible specifies that both men and women are made in the image of God corporately. 10:29.286 --> 10:38.552 [SPEAKER_01]: The unity and diversity of animals is found in their being made according to their kind, but the unity and diversity of people is rooted in our being made in the very image of the living God. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's so familiar. 10:45.656 --> 10:54.182 [SPEAKER_01]: And the danger is that we can miss how profound how world-shaking this language was in the ancient world that all people, 10:55.270 --> 11:14.235 [SPEAKER_01]: that every single person who has ever lived and whoever will live, whether male or female or young or old or rich or poor or weak or strong regards to talent or ability or ethnicity or even religion or morality, all people are made in the image of God. 11:14.575 --> 11:18.016 [SPEAKER_01]: You are made in the image of God. 11:18.497 --> 11:19.837 [SPEAKER_01]: Do you believe that? 11:21.456 --> 11:25.640 [SPEAKER_01]: This is the foundation of everything we're going to be talking about over the next few weeks. 11:26.841 --> 11:35.748 [SPEAKER_01]: Again, what the Bible is doing here is subverting and repurposing cultural language that was only meant for elites and aiming at all people. 11:37.019 --> 11:48.367 [SPEAKER_01]: And because all people are made in the image of the living God, all people are intrinsically worthy of dignity and respect honor without regard for any ability or status or achievement. 11:49.047 --> the goodness of his rule and his reign and his ordering downwards. 15:53.909 --> 15:59.171 [SPEAKER_01]: And the word priest is reflecting upwards to God, the glory and the praises and the prayers of who've been in church, you know, the answer is that something happened between Genesis chapter one and Genesis chapter nine. 16:56.572 --> 17:12.278 [SPEAKER_01]: In Genesis 3, the first two image bears, Adam and Eve, disobey God, instead of just being content to be the image of God, they desire to be God, to be like God himself, and their rebellion broke something deep inside our very human
