one comes on the back of that and today we meet again the King Nebuchadnezzar who in chapter one we see Conkers Jerusalem he looks the temple he marches the people of that kingdom into exile and yet in these first three chapters he runs 02:45.248 --> 02:49.969 [SPEAKER_00]: first through Daniel interpreting a dream for him that no one else could. 02:50.469 --> 02:58.730 [SPEAKER_00]: And then through another three young men, Shadrak, Mishak and Abedna go, who walk out of a fiery furnace, unburned. 02:59.391 --> 03:06.392 [SPEAKER_00]: And both times King Nebuchadnezzar says quite profound observations about God. 03:06.832 --> 03:08.592 [SPEAKER_00]: He even seems to praise God. 03:13.951 --> 03:21.960 [SPEAKER_00]: It turns out that you can recognize things in God and you can even declare things about God and not be changed by Him. 03:23.283 --> 03:31.365 [SPEAKER_00]: And so in chapter four, we come to a slightly different chapter because it's written in Nebuchadnezzar's voice. 03:31.965 --> 03:34.866 [SPEAKER_00]: It's written not just about him, but by him. 03:35.606 --> 03:37.186 [SPEAKER_00]: This is his testimony. 03:37.647 --> 03:41.267 [SPEAKER_00]: It's almost written as an open letter to his empire. 03:42.108 --> 03:51.350 [SPEAKER_00]: The most powerful man in life, telling the world about another encounter that he's had with the most high God. 03:52.510 orders that this tree be cut down, that its branches be locked, that its leaves be stripped, that the fruit be scutted and that the animals run away. 05:15.425 --> 05:18.566 [SPEAKER_00]: only a stump [SPEAKER_00]: And so he does what he does in chapter two. 06:10.863 --> 06:18.571 [SPEAKER_00]: He sends for the wise men the professionals, the magicians, the astrologers, and ask them to interpret when Nebuchadnezzar shares the dream with Daniel, Daniel is terrified, because he knows how people get treated by this king when they bring bad news. 06:35.603 --> 06:39.845 [SPEAKER_00]: He pushes through and he speaks truth to the most powerful man in life. 06:40.626 --> 06:48.610 [SPEAKER_00]: And he tells him your majesty, you are that tree, words that must have chilled Nebuchadnezzar. 06:50.356 --> 06:57.566 [SPEAKER_00]: Now I want to stay with the picture of a tree just for a moment, because this description of this tree is really beautiful. 06:58.928 --> 07:04.095 [SPEAKER_00]: This is a dream sent from God and it starts with a beautiful picture. 07:05.335 --> 07:10.518 [SPEAKER_00]: This is God's description of this man in his life, and it's not a grudging picture. 07:10.538 --> 07:26.988 [SPEAKER_00]: It's not a, yeah, he built in our city, but it lingers in the beauty and the abundance, the provision and the shelter of what this man has provided, which is not what you would expect in a chapter about judgment. 07:27.469 --> 07:32.452 [SPEAKER_00]: Certainly, it's not what you would expect about a king like Nebuchadnezzar, who is a violent man. 07:33.682 --> 07:43.487 [SPEAKER_00]: who is a pagan king, who has ransacked God's place, his temple, and led his people into exile. 07:44.348 --> 07:48.030 [SPEAKER_00]: And yet, beauty is what Nebuchadnezzar has looking at the book of as we've gone through this series says it plainly, he says there was something positively glorious about what Nebuchadnebbican as his achievements, and it seems that God approved of them at least on some level. 08:20.999 --> 08:28.125 [SPEAKER_00]: Now I want to be really clear here about what this does and doesn't mean, because God, I don't think, is endorsing the Babylonian Empire. 08:28.950 --> 08:38.437 [SPEAKER_00]: Babylon was built, it was an imperial machine, built on violence and idolatry, and will come to a moment on who actually built this city. 09:08.659 [SPEAKER_00]: And He gave people a garden to cultivate, to work, to plant, to be fruitful in, to make something off. 09:09.899 --> 09:12.700 [SPEAKER_00]: This is what God gave humanity to dream, why did he cut it down? 12:52.905 --> 13:00.516 [SPEAKER_00]: Before we get to the answer, I want to just look one more time at the picture itself because trees are never just trees in we don't have time to look at them all, but one of the types of trees that we see in Scripture are trees that describe people. 13:16.135 --> 13:25.964 [SPEAKER_00]: For example, in Psalm 1, we see this beautiful tree of someone who is living right, and the tree is beautiful, and it's abundant. 13:26.204 --> 13:27.966 [SPEAKER_00]: It provides fruit. 13:29.147 --> 13:38.371 [SPEAKER_00]: But there's something different about the tree in Nebuchadnezzar's dream from this tree and the other trees that are talked about in Scripture describing God's people. 13:39.051 --> 13:44.733 Have we ever heard that language before about something reaching heaven? 13:56.920 --> 14:07.105 [SPEAKER_00]: It reminds me of Genesis 11, where a people in Bible said, let's build a city for ourselves with a tower that reaches to the heavens. 14:07.305 --> 14:10.687 [SPEAKER_00]: It's exactly the same language as in this stream. 14:17.085 --> 14:19.927 [SPEAKER_00]: Where is Bible Babylon? 14:21.523 --> 14:23.643 [SPEAKER_00]: And there's another tree in Scripture. 14:23.843 --> 14:25.724 [SPEAKER_00]: In this tree is in a Zeke or 31. 14:26.024 --> 14:32.885 [SPEAKER_00]: And I wish we had more time today because putting it alongside the tree that we find in Daniel 4 is really interesting. 14:33.145 --> 14:35.566 [SPEAKER_00]: It's almost using exactly the same language. that God uses to warn another king, Pharaoh. 14:51.098 --> 15:00.784 [SPEAKER_00]: It's almost identical, but in Ezekiel, there are two things said explicitly that we don't see explicitly said in in verse 10, when the seeder is chopped down in as if you're 31, it is, there's a reason given because the great seeder towers over the thick foliage and because it was proud of its height. 15:45.774 --> 15:46.174 [SPEAKER_00]: Pride. 15:47.194 --> 15:56.921 [SPEAKER_00]: Pride is mentioned right at the end of Daniel 4 when Nebuchadnezzar diagnosis the problem that he'd had and it's here, front out the problem and then he gives away forward for Nebuchadnezzar. 17:12.056 --> 17:16.219 [SPEAKER_00]: There's a way out from being chopped down and we see it in verse 27. 17:16.739 --> 17:27.707 literally standing on the work of other people and calling it his own. 18:36.316 --> 18:41.339 [SPEAKER_00]: I built this city, which is exactly what he was about to do to guide on the roof or so. doing it one brick at a time. 18:59.025 --> 19:09.788 [SPEAKER_00]: archaeologists have found the bricks from the ruins of this area and they all have one thing stamped into them, the name of Nebuchadnezzar. 19:10.488 --> 19:16.090 [SPEAKER_00]: He literally built a city out of bricks stamped with his name. 19:16.630 --> 19:21.992 [SPEAKER_00]: He didn't just build a city, he signed it and in the attribution, because who gave Nebuchadnezzar the life that he had, the mind that could design the city, who gave him the health to finish the city, who gave him the empire that he inherited, just an ancient story that has no relevance for us. 20:06.378 --> 20:18.729 [SPEAKER_00]: Our world tells us to do exactly what Nebuchadnezzar was doing, to aim high, to build something big, to put illness that came out of the blue, the battle that you had with mental health, the death of someone that you loved, the relationship that ended, the year that took everything out of you. 31:33.203 --> David's royal line which is described as being cut back to nothing and there's a promise, a shoot will come from the stump of Jesse, from his roots, a branch will bear fruit. 33:36.951 --> 33:40.033 [SPEAKER_00]: From that stump will come something that bears fruit. 33:40.713 --> 33:48.338 [SPEAKER_00]: And anyone who knows their Bible knows that this is a prophecy about Jesus, the one who brings life out of the stumps. 33:49.599 --> 33:52.380 [SPEAKER_00]: And in Daniel 4, I think we get the key to finding that life. 33:53.261 --> 33:55.862 [SPEAKER_00]: And that is lifting our eyes to the
