While the firstborn of Israel will walk out of the tunes of Egypt alive, so we're going to focus on the firstborn in why some die and others live. 05:04.805 --> 05:10.508 [SPEAKER_01]: So look with me, if you will, at Exodus 11, we'll begin reading in verse 1, we'll read the whole chapter. 05:17.605 --> 05:21.128 [SPEAKER_01]: Yet one plague, more I will bring upon Pharaoh and upon Egypt. on why does God single out the firstborn for death? 08:53.423 --> 08:56.746 [SPEAKER_01]: Why this emphasis on the firstborn? 08:56.846 --> 08:57.887 [SPEAKER_01]: What is going on here? 08:59.153 --> 09:07.135 [SPEAKER_01]: Well, first, let's remember back to Exodus 4, verse 22 through 23, where God instructs Moses to say to Pharaoh. 09:07.175 --> 09:12.377 [SPEAKER_01]: So he's on his way to Egypt, God tells him, this is the message to give to Pharaoh. 09:12.737 --> 09:20.659 [SPEAKER_01]: Say this, thus says Yahweh, or thus says the Lord, Israel is my firstborn. 09:22.140 --> 09:25.641 [SPEAKER_01]: And I say to you, let my son go, that he may serve me. 09:26.483 --> 09:31.526 [SPEAKER_01]: If you refuse to let him go, behold, I will kill your first born son. 09:31.566 --> 09:33.348 [SPEAKER_01]: That's all the way back in Exodus 4. 09:33.408 --> 09:39.692 [SPEAKER_01]: That's as we're walking into Egypt, the warning God puts on Moses' lips to give to Pharaoh. 09:40.192 --> 09:43.234 [SPEAKER_01]: Israel is my first born son. 09:44.275 --> 09:48.918 [SPEAKER_01]: So even there we see that there's more going on with this imagery of the first born, because 09:49.967 --> 09:53.969 [SPEAKER_01]: It's not just the first son to leave the womb. 09:54.449 --> 10:10.477 [SPEAKER_01]: It certainly does mean that in some places in scripture, it is often true that the first born son was the first to leave the womb, but there's more going on here because God is saying that Israel is his first born son. 10:11.457 --> 10:16.580 [SPEAKER_01]: Bibliically, first born means continuity. 10:17.325 --> 10:18.686 [SPEAKER_01]: So think about that continuity. 10:18.946 --> 10:26.974 [SPEAKER_01]: The family line will not die out in this generation, and as far as Israel goes, the line of faith is continuing through Israel. 10:28.475 --> 10:29.996 [SPEAKER_01]: Firstborn means inheritance. 10:30.697 --> 10:39.204 [SPEAKER_01]: The firstborn receives the birthright of being the father's heir, and among the nations, Israel would inherit the promises of God. 10:40.445 --> 10:41.807 [SPEAKER_01]: Firstborn means strength. 10:42.820 --> 10:48.204 [SPEAKER_01]: This son will be the first in line to put his shoulder to hard work next to his father. 10:48.565 --> 10:51.527 [SPEAKER_01]: You while the other children are still little, they're still at home with mom. 10:51.867 --> 10:56.751 [SPEAKER_01]: But this firstborn son puts his shoulder into hard work with his dad first. 10:57.392 --> 11:01.796 [SPEAKER_01]: It's his strength, the father strength, the first son to rise up and work with his father. 11:02.096 --> 11:09.082 [SPEAKER_01]: And as far as Israel goes, they are the first among the nations to work with God 11:12.317 --> 11:17.201 [SPEAKER_01]: which is to call back to draw back the nations to himself and true worship. 11:17.521 --> 11:20.384 [SPEAKER_01]: They will be the first to work with God in this way. 11:22.245 --> 11:24.487 [SPEAKER_01]: The firstborn has to do with honor. 11:25.408 --> 11:33.775 [SPEAKER_01]: The Father bestows some of his honor on the firstborn's son for the sake of order and the family, especially in these ancient culture. 11:33.795 --> 11:39.059 [SPEAKER_01]: It was honor placed on the firstborn's son for the sake of order and the family. 11:39.982 --> 11:46.567 [SPEAKER_01]: And Israel is being elevated to a place of honor above the other nations for the good of the whole earth. 11:49.029 --> 11:52.952 [SPEAKER_01]: Finally, firstborn symbolizes representation. 11:54.173 --> 11:58.576 [SPEAKER_01]: Many of the lessons learned by the firstborn directly from his father. 11:59.356 --> 12:03.199 [SPEAKER_01]: He then is expected to turn around and help the other children learn. 12:04.680 --> 12:07.843 [SPEAKER_01]: Many of the things he learns he turns around and teaches to younger siblings. 12:08.858 --> 12:24.187 [SPEAKER_01]: And then something else that I've noticed as a parent is that when the children have an appeal they want to send up to a dad especially if it's a big house if they have something they want to send up they usually pick the first born to represent them they think they're going to have the best cloud with dad. 12:25.167 --> 12:33.832 [SPEAKER_01]: So they all convince the first born this needs to be brought to dad and then they go represent in a much more sophisticated clear way giving their arguments. 12:39.254 --> 12:47.097 [SPEAKER_01]: And as far as Israel goes, on earth, Israel was going to represent God to the nations. 12:48.978 --> 12:53.040 [SPEAKER_01]: And then they were supposed to intercede on behalf of the nations to God. 12:56.101 --> 13:01.803 [SPEAKER_01]: Therefore with all this in mind, we could summarize firstborn as headship. 13:07.816 --> 13:15.560 [SPEAKER_01]: And Israel was being called and commissioned by God to lead the other nations back to God. 13:17.441 --> 13:33.990 [SPEAKER_01]: Remember that in Genesis 22 verse 18, God promises to Abraham, the Father, Isaac, and Jacob, and of the entire nation of Israel, God says to Abraham, in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. 13:35.532 --> 13:40.956 [SPEAKER_01]: God chose and appointed the nation of Israel as his firstborn son on earth. 13:41.056 --> 13:44.039 [SPEAKER_01]: That is what we're seeing here happening in Exodus. 13:46.501 --> Genesis, that it's Adam and the Garden of Eden. 13:58.730 --> 14:01.653 [SPEAKER_01]: The first man, the head of the human race. 14:04.000 --> 14:11.564 [SPEAKER_01]: but we also find out that Adam failed in carrying the mantle of being God's appointed firstborn, he failed. 14:12.624 --> 14:16.526 [SPEAKER_01]: He failed to lead the human race into the true worship of God. 14:16.906 --> 14:25.170 [SPEAKER_01]: In fact, his rebellion led the entire human race into a cursed existence under the condemnation of death. 14:26.551 --> 14:28.492 [SPEAKER_01]: Paul tells us this in 1 Corinthians 15, 14:29.903 --> 14:47.928 [SPEAKER_01]: 21 that by Adam's failure came death and in Adam all die, in Adam all die, Adam was the original firstborn but he became the firstborn unto death. Listen to this, Romans 5, 12, or sin and death are compared to a disease spreading throughout all of us, Romans 5, 12, sin came into the world through one man, it's Adam. 16:08.783 --> 16:15.890 [SPEAKER_01]: And death through sin, sin consequence, death began with Adam, came into the world. 16:17.345 --> 16:24.388 [SPEAKER_01]: And so, death spread to all men because all sinned. 16:26.308 verse 3, all the descendants of Adam are called children of wrath. 17:24.402 --> 17:27.684 [SPEAKER_01]: Now, parents with young children might think that means the children are angry. 17:27.704 --> the burden of leading the nations back to the worship of God. 20:14.534 --> 20:27.161 [SPEAKER_01]: In fact, the vast majority of the first born of men did nothing but lead their families into even and the cleansing of the Promised Land and the Mount of Zion and the temple were all leading to a place where there was a people who knew God, fear God, and finding forgiveness, they now loved God. [SPEAKER_01]: They were supposed to then turn around and welcome the nations, the families of the earth to come to Zion, come to our God, come and meet the one true God and find peace with God. by not letting Israel go by killing the sons all the little boys of the Israelites whether the human leaders knew about the 23:07.196 --> 23:12.000 [SPEAKER_01]: In putting all the sons of Israel to dead, this is what they're attempting to stop. 23:13.421 --> 23:21.708 [SPEAKER_01]: The Exodus, which would lead to a place in a people who would call the nations back to the one true God. 23:23.869
