05:47.900 --> 05:55.784 [SPEAKER_00]: It was like, it was like when Paul gets saved and Barnabas has to like vouch for him to all the apostles in Jerusalem and Antioch. 05:55.804 --> 05:58.446 [SPEAKER_00]: They're like, wait, well, let me just persecuting us like two weeks ago. 05:59.576 --> 06:04.559 [SPEAKER_00]: It's kind of like that with Jamison, and it's just amazing how the Lord changed his life. 06:07.160 --> 06:11.583 [SPEAKER_00]: And now hardly two weeks go by sense where we haven't talked or hung out in some ways, one of our best friends. 06:12.583 --> 06:13.724 [SPEAKER_00]: It's an amazing thing. 06:15.641 --> 06:30.854 [SPEAKER_00]: And so guys, as we bring it to this passage this morning, my hope is that we are challenged to demonstrate to people what the beauty of Christianity is all about, which is showing people who Jesus is by declaring His power and His mercy. 06:32.455 --> 06:40.502 [SPEAKER_00]: Because that's really what Christianity's testifying to, is the power and mercy and grace of God through Jesus Christ. 06:42.405 --> 06:50.189 [SPEAKER_00]: And friends, you may not have some wild and out testimony like my friend Jamison, but proof that God still works miracles today is that there's Christians in this room. 06:51.689 --> 07:02.875 [SPEAKER_00]: Because as John rightfully pointed out, the greatest miracle that can ever happen to you is that of salvation, being brought from spiritual death to spiritual resurrection life in Christ. 07:04.416 --> 07:12.559 [SPEAKER_00]: and every any and every instance of a sin or brought to salvation is cause for a joy scene because it is nothing less than a miracle, right? 07:13.159 --> 07:14.279 [SPEAKER_00]: It's an amazing thing. 07:14.399 --> 07:18.680 [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, just think about in your own mind the ways that God has been so merciful to you over the years. 07:20.161 --> 07:25.462 [SPEAKER_00]: And so guys, as we jump in, our first point that we're going to be looking at is, we declare Jesus' power. 07:26.003 --> 07:30.284 [SPEAKER_00]: When we're declaring Jesus, the first thing we're doing is we're declaring Jesus' power. 07:32.335 --> 07:38.360 [SPEAKER_00]: And we're going to be looking at verses one through 13 here if you want to fall along with me as I read in Mark chapter five. 07:42.184 --> 07:43.665 [SPEAKER_00]: John Mark records this. 07:45.707 --> 07:50.571 [SPEAKER_00]: They, meaning Jesus and his disciples, they came to the other side of the seed to the country of the garrisons. 07:51.592 --> 07:57.718 [SPEAKER_00]: And when Jesus stepped out of the boat, immediately they're met him out of the tombs, a man with an unclean spirit. 07:58.643 --> 08:03.428 [SPEAKER_00]: He lived among the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, verse four. 08:04.189 --> 08:10.776 [SPEAKER_00]: For he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched to the chains apart, and he broke the shackles and pieces. 08:11.878 --> 08:13.539 [SPEAKER_00]: No one had the strength to subdue him. 08:14.781 --> 08:20.187 [SPEAKER_00]: Night and day among the tombs, and on the mountains, he was always cutting himself, or crying out and cutting himself with stones. 08:21.627 --> 08:29.911 [SPEAKER_00]: And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him and crying out with a loud voice, he said, what have you to do with me, Jesus, some of the most high God? 09:26.004 --> 09:27.386 [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, what a powerful testimony. 09:27.426 --> 09:38.160 [SPEAKER_00]: And yet, once again, my hope is that you also actually see yourself in this story as time goes on, in a certain way that we'll get into, but hopefully you also see yourself a little bit. 09:39.795 --> 09:46.680 [SPEAKER_00]: Now, when we look at this passage, there's some important context to understand in this section of Mark's account of the gospel account. 09:47.340 --> 09:53.805 [SPEAKER_00]: If you've been through the Christian story class in the Institute, you know, we love making sure we understand the Bible in context, right? 09:54.765 --> 09:57.087 [SPEAKER_00]: We have to understand it in context. 09:57.828 --> 10:00.850 [SPEAKER_00]: It's a problem if we miss the force for the trees. 10:02.120 --> 10:05.741 [SPEAKER_00]: If we don't understand the whole, we can sometimes do bad things with the parts, right? 10:05.781 --> 10:07.141 [SPEAKER_00]: We need to know the context. 10:07.922 --> 10:15.624 [SPEAKER_00]: That said, this passage in March, chapter 5, a displaying Jesus' early ministry, which was filled with the miraculous. 10:16.364 --> 10:26.027 [SPEAKER_00]: As a way of drawing people in and getting the ministry off the ground, since Jesus' miracles were means to authenticate his message in his identity as the messenger. 10:27.672 --> 10:42.402 [SPEAKER_00]: And specifically this passage, it's in a larger section of Mark spanning from Mark chapter four, verses 35, to Mark chapter five, verse 43, where Jesus is divine authority as the Son of God is demonstrated in different ways to those around him. 10:43.723 --> 10:50.848 [SPEAKER_00]: And so thinking about this way, his authority over nature, it's displayed in chapter four, verses 34 and 41 where he calls a storm. 10:52.329 --> 10:55.531 [SPEAKER_00]: It's displayed, it's demonstrated in our section 10:58.314 --> 11:06.297 [SPEAKER_00]: His authority over disease is demonstrated in Chapter 5, verses 21 through 34, when he heals a woman with a chronic discharge of blood. 11:06.997 --> 11:13.019 [SPEAKER_00]: And lastly, his authority over death itself is demonstrated when he raises Jyrus' daughter. 11:13.839 --> 11:18.781 [SPEAKER_00]: So this is an asexion where Jesus is displaying the different ways that his power is demonstrated. 11:20.707 --> 11:26.534 [SPEAKER_00]: And these instances of his power extremely meaningful as we'll come to see, but jumping into a verse is one through two, look at this with me. 11:26.715 --> 11:27.315 [SPEAKER_00]: We read this. 11:27.936 --> 11:30.880 [SPEAKER_00]: They came to the other side of the sea, the country, the garrisons. 11:31.641 --> 11:38.489 [SPEAKER_00]: And when Jesus stepped out of the boat immediately, they're met him a man out of the tombs, a man with an unclean spirit. 11:39.448 --> 11:53.494 [SPEAKER_00]: And so, Jesus and His disciples, they come to the other side of the Sea of Galilee after Jesus calms the storm to a town in the Gentile region of the Garazines, which is part of a sort of conglomeration of ten non-Jewish cities called the Decapilus. 11:54.654 --> 11:58.035 [SPEAKER_00]: And this sets the scene in a powerful way because now where are they? 11:58.335 --> 12:04.698 [SPEAKER_00]: They're in a Gentile, unclean region for the Jews, according to Old Testament ceremonial law. 12:05.963 --> 12:08.405 [SPEAKER_00]: which is an interesting setup for how this story pans out. 12:08.846 --> 12:15.252 [SPEAKER_00]: And then there are met immediately by a man who has an unclean spirit, meaning a demonic spirit and rebellion against God. 12:15.972 --> 12:19.656 [SPEAKER_00]: And he's also living among the tombs, which is unclean as well. 12:20.036 --> 12:24.441 [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, this situation is as unclean from a ceremonial perspective as it gets, right?
