passage that we just heard read from Revelation chapter 3. 02:22.094 --> 02:24.298 [SPEAKER_00]: And it's a passage that has been 02:24.278 --> 02:27.723 [SPEAKER_00]: working on me and challenging me for the last two years. 02:28.404 --> 02:36.436 [SPEAKER_00]: And that's because two years ago I got in a summer to go overseas to visit brothers and sisters on the other side of the world and be in a church service there. 02:36.996 --> 02:45.749 [SPEAKER_00]: I was invited to visit and preach on a Sunday there and a few days before I headed out midweek I received a text from the pastor of that church. 02:46.230 --> 02:49.915 [SPEAKER_00]: He wanted to inform me of what was happening there that the church was facing. 02:49.895 --> 03:03.971 [SPEAKER_00]: He told me that on the Sunday prior, that seven days before I was supposed to be there, that after the gathering, the church was just fellowshiping together when a crowd of opponents came and began to verbally and then physically harassed the church. 03:04.732 --> 03:17.927 [SPEAKER_00]: The tension escalated to the point that the opponents called the authorities and made false accusations against the church and the authorities threatened the church about what would happen to them if they dared show up the following week. 03:18.160 --> 03:20.826 [SPEAKER_00]: the following week being when I was scheduled to be there. 03:21.488 --> 03:24.074 [SPEAKER_00]: Now you don't know me and I don't know you so I'll just let you in on. 03:24.515 --> 03:26.600 [SPEAKER_00]: There is not a brave bone in my body. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I said, of course I'm going, you know? 03:50.729 --> 03:53.874 [SPEAKER_00]: Because the only thing I'm more afraid of than persecution is my wife. 03:54.475 --> 03:57.539 [SPEAKER_00]: And so I didn't want to look like a punk in front of her, so I got in on that plane. 03:58.200 --> 04:00.043 [SPEAKER_00]: And the whole plane ride, I kid you not. 04:00.083 --> 04:03.808 [SPEAKER_00]: I kept thinking to myself, how much of this do I actually believe? 04:05.050 --> 04:07.834 [SPEAKER_00]: Like I have talked about this for decades. 04:08.395 --> 04:09.977 believe these things to be true? 04:17.189 --> 04:37.493 [SPEAKER_00]: We landed, and we found out that the church had come to hear that an even larger crowd was organizing itself, and so they switched the locations, went to a secret place, and I preached to 250 people that gathered again, though they had been harassed seven days earlier because they wanted to hear God's word and be God's people. 04:38.030 --> 04:47.241 [SPEAKER_00]: Now, as I sat through that, you can't go through something like that without something in you shifting, and I couldn't help but feel like how are we both the same? 04:48.282 --> 04:53.188 [SPEAKER_00]: Like your Christian, I'm Christian, but it really does feel like we're in a different tribe. 04:53.849 --> 05:03.100 [SPEAKER_00]: And what it looks like for you to love and follow Jesus and what it costs you to do that feels radically different in your context than what it looks like for me. 05:03.761 --> 05:06.484 [SPEAKER_00]: To love Jesus, follow Jesus in mind. 05:06.903 --> 05:12.829 [SPEAKER_00]: That morning, I got to preach from the chapter right before the one we read, in Revelation chapter 2. 05:13.649 --> 05:17.513 [SPEAKER_00]: And I got to preach just to orient you to what's happening in Revelation 2 and 3. 05:18.074 --> 05:21.457 [SPEAKER_00]: Jesus writes seven letters to seven churches in Asia. 05:21.897 --> 05:26.442 [SPEAKER_00]: There's more than seven churches, but he writes to seven as sort of the number of completeness. 05:26.562 --> 05:31.466 [SPEAKER_00]: So he's writing to seven churches to indicate this is for all churches everywhere. 05:31.486 --> 05:35.290 [SPEAKER_00]: This is to the complete church, the total church. 05:35.270 --> 05:37.594 [SPEAKER_00]: But through them, it's letters for us. 05:38.355 --> 05:44.445 [SPEAKER_00]: And so in Revelation 2, the church that I got to preach to them that morning was a church called Smerna. 05:44.465 --> 05:48.732 [SPEAKER_00]: Smerna, if you read Revelation 2, is a poor, persecuted church. 05:49.252 --> 05:54.220 [SPEAKER_00]: In fact, Jesus literally says, I know your tribulation and your poverty. 05:54.942 --> 05:58.648 [SPEAKER_00]: But then he goes on to say, but you are rich. 05:59.569 --> 06:00.771 [SPEAKER_00]: It's really striking. 06:00.987 --> 06:07.575 [SPEAKER_00]: To a dirt portrait, he says, in all the ways that really matter, you are rich. 06:08.837 --> 06:16.086 [SPEAKER_00]: And then you can't help but be struck by what you see juxtaposed in the next chapter in the church at Leodicea. 06:16.607 --> 06:21.713 [SPEAKER_00]: It's because I couldn't help but consider where I had been and where I lived. 06:22.553 --> 06:27.481 [SPEAKER_00]: And what it looks like for the people of God there and what it looks like for the people of God here. 06:28.302 --> 06:33.932 [SPEAKER_00]: And when you put these two churches together, the contrast between the two is striking. 06:34.392 --> 06:43.988 [SPEAKER_00]: So for example, if Smyrna is a poor, persecuted church, the church at Leia to see of the one we just read in chapter three is a rich, comfortable church. 06:44.558 --> 06:51.528 [SPEAKER_00]: And as you read chapters two and three, you'll find that Jesus gives sort of an assessment to all the churches, sort of a report card. 06:51.548 --> 06:53.551 [SPEAKER_00]: And every church gets amazed and gets some bees. 06:53.851 --> 06:55.934 [SPEAKER_00]: Some things they're doing really well, some things they're not. 06:56.395 --> 07:00.140 [SPEAKER_00]: But what's striking is the church in Smyrna gets straight A's. 07:01.001 --> 07:02.483 [SPEAKER_00]: He has nothing bad to say about them. 07:03.144 --> 07:07.050 [SPEAKER_00]: No correction, no critique, no threat of condemnation at all. 07:07.430 --> 07:10.735 [SPEAKER_00]: It's nothing but commendation and encouragement. 07:11.744 --> 07:18.537 [SPEAKER_00]: In contrast, the church at Lea to see of the one in chapter three, he has nothing good to say about it at all. 07:19.419 --> 07:23.808 [SPEAKER_00]: It's one of the only of the seven where he has not one word of commendation. 07:24.329 --> 07:26.353 [SPEAKER_00]: If it's a report card, it's straight-offs. 07:27.335 --> 07:33.988 [SPEAKER_00]: Everything he says to that church is words of critique and correction and the threat of condemnation. 07:35.082 --> 07:43.872 [SPEAKER_00]: And so you put these two churches together and you can't help but feel the difference between where I was and where I live. 07:44.813 --> 07:48.437 [SPEAKER_00]: Now citizen church, I really am just a guest preacher for one week. 07:49.297 --> 07:54.103 [SPEAKER_00]: I have no idea what it looks like for you to love and follow Jesus in your city. 07:54.723 --> 08:03.553 [SPEAKER_00]: I have no idea what the ins and outs of life in your church is, but what I do know really well is what it is to be a Christian in America. 08:04.377 --> 08:05.479 [SPEAKER_00]: This is where I was born. 08:05.639 --> 08:06.901 [SPEAKER_00]: This is where I've lived my whole life. 08:07.181 --> 08:10.286 [SPEAKER_00]: This is the air I breathe in the culture in which I'm trying to follow Christ. 08:10.787 --> 08:21.263 [SPEAKER_00]: And in this culture, I do know what it's like to say out of all the churches in Revelation 2 and 3, the context and culture we live in looks a lot like Leodicea. 08:22.124 --> 08:29.676 [SPEAKER_00]: And therefore, we would do well to hear what Jesus has to say to them and through them to us. 08:30.247 --> 08:40.539 [SPEAKER_00]: See, because if you read the letter to the lay of the Seans, if you read Revelation chapter 3, you will find that the church in Lyodysia is the unhealthiest of them all. 08:41.520 --> 08:45.705 [SPEAKER_00]: They receive Jesus's harshest words and strongest rebuk. 08:46.526 --> 08:52.914 [SPEAKER_00]: In fact, if you've even briefly read this before, this is the church that is famous for being the lukewarm church. 08:53.815 --> 08:55.697 [SPEAKER_00]: The church that nauseates Christ. 08:56.200 --> 09:00.307 [SPEAKER_00]: and turns his stomach and makes the Lord Jesus want to puke. 09:01.369 --> 09:02.170 [SPEAKER_00]: You know what that's like. 09:02.631 --> 09:14.110 [SPEAKER_00]: You know what it's like to have tasted something that has gone bad, just a sip of milk that has turned sour, and you know the reflex you have, the desire you have to gag and spit it out. 09:15.211 --> 09:19.238 [SPEAKER_00]: And Jesus is saying, that's what the lay of the sea and Christians have become. 09:19.994 --> 09:22.297 [SPEAKER_00]: That's what this church is like to Jesus. 09:22.597 --> 09:29.245 [SPEAKER_00]: It's a church that nauseates Christ and a group of Christians that makes him want to vomit. 09:30.246 --> 09:35.773 [SPEAKER_00]: And that's because to be Luke warm is to be useless. 09:35.793 --> 09:40.138 [SPEAKER_00]: To be Luke warm is to be good for nothing except to be thrown [SPEAKER_00]: On a hot day, there's nothing you want more than a cold glass of lemonade or a cold glass of water. 09:52.744 --> 09:56.770 [SPEAKER_00]: But no one ever reaches for a warm soda that's been left in your car. 09:57.651 --> 10:06.625 [SPEAKER_00]: It's why when you go to Starbucks today, you'll find on the menu there's hot coffee, there's ice coffee, but no menu in the world has now serving room temperature coffee. 10:07.366 --> 10:09.229 [SPEAKER_00]: Today's special is lukewarm coffee. 10:09.910 --> 10:14.217 [SPEAKER_00]: You know that because to be lukewarm is to be useless. 10:14.281 --> 10:21.333 [SPEAKER_00]: It's an ineffective, it's to be good for nothing except to be spit out, and that's what the church at Leia de Cia had become. 10:22.375 --> 10:27.083 [SPEAKER_00]: So living where we do, and seeking to follow Christ where we are, we would do well to hear what He says. 10:27.684 --> 10:30.368 [SPEAKER_00]: And here's how the body of His letter begins. 10:30.468 --> 10:32.331 [SPEAKER_00]: This is chapter 3, verse 15. 10:32.792 --> 10:38.061 [SPEAKER_00]: Revelation chapter 3, beginning at verse 15, He says, I know your works. 10:38.885 --> 10:40.968 [SPEAKER_00]: You are neither cold nor hot. 10:41.729 --> 10:43.592 [SPEAKER_00]: Would that you were either cold or hot? 10:43.992 --> 10:49.280 [SPEAKER_00]: So because you are lukewarm and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. 10:50.402 --> 10:54.949 [SPEAKER_00]: Now, there's been no shortage of ink spilled to try and explain what is Jesus saying here. 10:55.489 --> 10:59.695 [SPEAKER_00]: He's almost saying to them, I wish you were hot or wish you were cold, but because you're neither I'm gonna spit you out of my mouth. 11:00.016 --> 11:06.225 [SPEAKER_00]: But what's perhaps confusing to us, I think would have been clear to those who first received his words. 11:06.340 --> 11:11.207 [SPEAKER_00]: Meaning, the people in Leia de Cia, I think they would have understood because of where they lived. 11:12.189 --> 11:18.919 [SPEAKER_00]: As you look at any ancient map and you'll find, Leia de Cia was in a valley between two sister cities on either side. 11:18.959 --> 11:22.324 [SPEAKER_00]: There was Hieropolis on one side, Colosseum on the other. 11:23.045 --> 11:28.213 [SPEAKER_00]: And even in that ancient world, Hieropolis was known for its hot springs. 11:28.193 --> 11:30.117 [SPEAKER_00]: It was known for its heat and hot water. 11:30.378 --> 11:32.603 [SPEAKER_00]: And you know how medicinal that can be. 11:32.643 --> 11:39.458 [SPEAKER_00]: So for example, if your body is stiff and sore, what feels better than a hot shower or a hot tub or a sauna? 11:39.719 --> 11:43.688 [SPEAKER_00]: There's something healing to the property of that heat. 11:43.955 --> 11:46.138 [SPEAKER_00]: Or, on the other hand, you had Colossi on the other side. 11:46.618 --> 11:54.587 [SPEAKER_00]: Colossi was known for the opposite, which is, there was nothing better on a hot summer day than cold water that came from the mountains of Colossi. 11:55.188 --> 12:03.137 [SPEAKER_00]: And you know how refreshing and life-giving that can be to have a cold glass of water on a hot day, but Leodicea was neither. 12:04.038 --> 12:05.420 [SPEAKER_00]: Neither hot nor cold. 12:05.960 --> 12:13.489 [SPEAKER_00]: In fact, there's literally ancient writings that tell us, by the time they piped in water to Leodicea, 12:14.060 --> 12:20.289 [SPEAKER_00]: and lukewarm so that you literally have ancient writings that talk about how the people would take a sip and want to vomit. 12:21.530 --> 12:29.321 [SPEAKER_00]: Jesus uses something they would have readily understood to convince them you have become just like the place where you live. 12:30.382 --> 12:43.240 [SPEAKER_00]: You look just like your city, not hot as in here's a group of Christians that are not the source of healing to a dying world giving them the medicine 12:43.979 --> 12:51.731 [SPEAKER_00]: nor a group of Christians, nor a church that is giving to a thirsty world, the living water who is Jesus Christ, but neither hot nor cold. 12:51.771 --> 12:54.415 [SPEAKER_00]: In fact, in the original language, it's not even just hot or cold. 12:54.435 --> 12:55.516 [SPEAKER_00]: It's in the extremes. 12:56.237 --> 13:01.826 [SPEAKER_00]: All that you would be piping hot or freezing cold, but you are this tepid middle. 13:02.907 --> 13:08.856 [SPEAKER_00]: This middling mediocre middle, and it makes Jesus want to vomit. 13:09.342 --> 13:12.170 [SPEAKER_00]: a lukewarm church in the middle. 13:12.831 --> 13:25.225 [SPEAKER_00]: Now, the way that Jesus introduces himself to this church in verse 14, I think clues us into how this church and where this church had become useless and ineffective. 13:25.205 --> 13:34.655 [SPEAKER_00]: What I mean is, if you read through the seven churches, you'll find that Jesus doesn't just give a blanket greeting or sign signature to each of the churches. 13:34.936 --> 13:38.980 [SPEAKER_00]: It's not two Smyrna love Jesus, or two Philadelphia love Jesus. 13:39.441 --> 13:43.706 [SPEAKER_00]: Each church gets a custom greeting and a custom signature. 13:44.266 --> 13:49.412 [SPEAKER_00]: In fact, each church gets a signature that is particularly what that church needs to hear. 13:49.973 --> 13:53.136 [SPEAKER_00]: So for example, if you're Smyrna 13:53.470 --> 14:02.363 [SPEAKER_00]: danger of persecution and prison and death, you would do well to hear from the words of the one who died and came to life. 14:03.384 --> 14:03.765 [SPEAKER_00]: You see that? 14:03.825 --> 14:04.566 [SPEAKER_00]: It's not generic. 14:05.027 --> 14:11.737 [SPEAKER_00]: It's a custom greeting from Jesus to a people that are facing death and saying, here are the words of the one who died and came to life. 14:12.778 --> 14:22.212 [SPEAKER_00]: So then it's not an accident that to lay a decision, Jesus says, here are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness. 14:22.968 --> 14:27.694 [SPEAKER_00]: Here are the words of the one who is the truth, and who always bears witness to the truth. 14:27.814 --> 14:35.443 [SPEAKER_00]: And I think that was to show particularly in contrast the place where they had become ineffective and useless. 14:36.345 --> 14:44.675 [SPEAKER_00]: In that most basic function good is a church that doesn't bear witness? 14:50.575 --> 14:51.336 [SPEAKER_00]: You think of it with me? 14:51.697 --> 14:53.440 [SPEAKER_00]: What good is a car that doesn't drive? 14:54.602 --> 14:55.984 [SPEAKER_00]: A plane that doesn't fly? 14:57.066 --> 15:01.133 [SPEAKER_00]: Does anyone keep in their pocket a cell phone that doesn't make calls or syntax? 15:02.095 --> 15:06.903 [SPEAKER_00]: A bum cell phone is good for nothing except to be thrown out. 15:08.365 --> 15:12.212 [SPEAKER_00]: And so, what good is a church that doesn't make disciples? 15:13.036 --> 15:21.630 [SPEAKER_00]: A group of Christians that doesn't offer a dying world, the medicine of the gospel, or a thirsty world, the living water, who is Jesus Christ. 15:22.691 --> 15:33.188 [SPEAKER_00]: What good is that inward, insular face and church that knows all the right doctrines and confesses all the right creeds and yet isn't moved by any of them? 15:33.370 --> 15:35.132 [SPEAKER_00]: isn't stirred by any of them. 15:35.713 --> 15:37.735 [SPEAKER_00]: You see, you know what the church at Leia de Cia is? 15:38.376 --> 15:48.247 [SPEAKER_00]: The church in Leia de Cia is that church in America that is not antagonistic to the gospel, but just over time has grown apathetic to the gospel. 15:48.267 --> 15:53.954 [SPEAKER_00]: The by no means is opposed to Jesus, but just isn't obsessed with Jesus either. 15:54.815 --> 16:01.723 [SPEAKER_00]: It's the Christian who certainly doesn't hate Christ, but just doesn't zealously love Him either. 16:02.530 --> 16:17.127 [SPEAKER_00]: And so can you imagine a group of Christians who knows the gospel and is bored by it, who gets sing of salvation and do so with a yarn, who could teach the doctrines of hell and yet not care that anyone's actually going there. 16:18.229 --> 16:30.343 [SPEAKER_00]: That's what the church at Leia de Cia had become, a moderate, middling, managed, mediocre Christianity and that kind of Christianity makes Jesus want to her. 16:31.049 --> 16:35.635 [SPEAKER_00]: In fact, what striking is, this is the worst church of the seven. 16:36.556 --> 16:43.444 [SPEAKER_00]: And why that's especially striking is, when you read the other churches, you find that there are serious problems in the other churches. 16:44.105 --> 16:46.668 [SPEAKER_00]: You're talking about doctrinal error and heresy. 16:47.169 --> 16:52.496 [SPEAKER_00]: You're talking about compromise, sexual sin and scandal, hypocrisy in its leaders. 16:52.836 --> 16:59.284 [SPEAKER_00]: And yet with all of that in the other churches, the harshest words Jesus has is for Leia to see it. 16:59.433 --> 17:00.234 [SPEAKER_00]: It's really crazy. 17:00.815 --> 17:03.718 [SPEAKER_00]: Inlayer to see it, there's not a mention of heresy. 17:03.738 --> 17:09.906 [SPEAKER_00]: No doctrinal errors, no compromise, no sexual sin, no scandals, no problems with its leadership. 17:09.926 --> 17:19.018 [SPEAKER_00]: All its doctrine is pristine and perfect and yet the harshest words Jesus has is for the middle of the way, mediocre, managed, middling Christianity. 17:19.799 --> 17:22.943 [SPEAKER_00]: That's the one that gets the
