we think the new birth is, is culturally we see the new birth as a moral structure. 04:44.678 --> 04:49.588 [SPEAKER_00]: turning the new birth into spiritual effort, or self effort, or spiritual that we live in, and that the society says that we are, and sometimes we uphold this. 05:00.610 --> 05:05.860 [SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's about doing a clean life for doing everything right, or [SPEAKER_00]: But what I'm talking about here is more structure is putting the cart before the horse. 05:26.360 --> 05:37.196 [SPEAKER_00]: You see, we think about the new birth manly as this, someone that Christians live up to or through effort and performance, but Jesus was Nicodemus is deeply confronting if that's true. 05:38.017 --> 05:39.279 [SPEAKER_00]: He says you must be born again. 05:40.320 --> 05:40.861 [SPEAKER_00]: Why is that? 05:40.921 --> 05:44.547 [SPEAKER_00]: Because Nicodemus in every visible measure was doing well. 05:45.428 --> 05:49.173 [SPEAKER_00]: He was deeply religious, morally upright according to the law. 05:49.193 --> 05:52.418 [SPEAKER_00]: Highly respected among peers, 05:52.972 --> 05:59.845 [SPEAKER_00]: And if being born again was simply being a better person, or trying harder, Nicodemus would be at the front of the line. 06:02.750 --> 06:05.696 [SPEAKER_00]: So yet Jesus lovingly tells him you must be born again. 06:07.058 --> 06:08.601 [SPEAKER_00]: And so then what is the new birth? 06:08.661 --> 06:13.590 [SPEAKER_00]: Tim Kuller puts it this way, being born again isn't a call to morality. 06:13.630 --> 06:16.195 [SPEAKER_00]: It's to challenge it. 06:17.238 --> 06:26.893 [SPEAKER_00]: It's like driving and thick fog trying to live out your faith through sheer whip, willpower, striving to impress God in the achieve a righteous lifestyle. 06:28.325 --> 06:40.860 [SPEAKER_00]: It's like switching your high beams on, and it feels like the right move, and it might seem responsible, but at the instead and clearing the way with this fog, the light just reflects back at you and makes it harder to see. 06:41.301 --> 06:52.594 [SPEAKER_00]: And in the same way, we rely, if we rely on effort in our faith, if we've end up more focused on our performance, we actually rob us of what God actually wants for us. 06:53.992 --> 06:58.238 [SPEAKER_00]: we don't really need brighter headlights, we need the fog to lift. 06:59.639 --> 07:05.227 [SPEAKER_00]: And so as we unpack this story, as we unpack the conversation, we need to understand who Jesus is talking to. 07:06.028 --> 07:07.410 [SPEAKER_00]: Jesus is talking to Nicodemus. 07:07.430 --> 07:09.332 [SPEAKER_00]: He's a Pharisee, he's a religious teacher. 07:10.093 --> 07:21.889 [SPEAKER_00]: And so when we talk about this conversation, it might not make sense to us on the page because there's a lot of terminology, but we need to know that Jesus is talking to someone who knows the religious law. 07:21.869 --> 07:30.468 [SPEAKER_00]: So going through that land, we're going to actually go through this section two of what the new birth actually is in this conversation and what Jesus actually says about the new birth. 07:31.871 --> 07:33.274 08:52.778 [SPEAKER_00]: He meets Nicodemus with familiar language, patiently upholding, unfolding a deeper reality that Nicodemus is wrote about, but not truly seen. 08:54.360 --> 09:00.967 [SPEAKER_00]: You see the first thing that he's unpacking here is a lot of scholars talk about Jesus with this border of spirit. 09:01.027 --> 09:02.429 [SPEAKER_00]: I've been born of war and spirit. 09:02.549 --> 09:07.054 [SPEAKER_00]: He's referring to his Eheel 36, 09:08.063 --> 09:33.109 [SPEAKER_00]: So in context as Eheel was a profit back when Israel was in exile and back with Babylon and he has his vision, the Lord speaks to him in this vision and we're open up from 36 first 25 to 27 and the Lord says this, I will sprinkle clean water on you and you shall be clean from all your own [SPEAKER_00]: and renewal of the Holy Spirit. 10:30.446 --> 10:37.656 [SPEAKER_00]: You see, Jesus confronts Nicodemus' moral framework, shifting the conversation from reformation to transformation. 10:39.492 --> 10:45.498 [SPEAKER_00]: What I mean by Reformation to Transformation, you think a Reformation as an example, I will use a garden. 10:46.379 --> 10:54.448 [SPEAKER_00]: I have some long grass at home, I live with a bunch of guys, and the grass grows really, really long in spring. 10:55.289 --> 11:03.998 [SPEAKER_00]: We have this wee tree that we call, like this wee tree that we have, and every year we mow the grass on every year, but once a while we mow the grass, 11:04.720 --> 11:05.962 [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it's what's the year we'll see. 11:06.743 --> 11:12.873 [SPEAKER_00]: And now and again, we keep with the weed tree that we grow, it keeps sproutsy up. 11:13.594 --> 11:16.819 [SPEAKER_00]: And we mow it down and it keeps growing back. 11:16.859 --> obviously the lens of being born again is from a physical birth. 14:23.695 --> 14:28.488 [SPEAKER_00]: So that's why Nicodemus invests through a four early in the passage is like, can I enter my mother's room when I'm old? 14:28.548 --> 14:31.797 [SPEAKER_00]: Like being sick for a second birth is coming from a lens from a Pharisee. 14:33.633 --> 14:37.945 [SPEAKER_00]: And so he's going, his birth, even these people in the room, seeing the birth, new birth through a rough mesh and lens, of improving your life, like a new birth, new cushion, like in my life, the Jesus, and I'm gonna be a
