[SPEAKER_01]: So right now Moses is in Horab on the mountain of Sinai. 00:52.832 --> 00:54.354 [SPEAKER_01]: So the mountain of the Lord. 00:55.856 --> 01:00.041 [SPEAKER_01]: And he has been a shepherd in the wilderness now for 40 years. 01:00.141 --> 01:04.406 [SPEAKER_01]: He started off as one of the princes of Egypt for 40 years. 01:05.427 --> 01:14.638 [SPEAKER_01]: Then he murdered an Egyptian and had to flee Egypt and he has now been a shepherd, and nobody really in, 01:15.091 --> 01:16.934 [SPEAKER_01]: the wilderness for 40 years. 01:18.055 --> 01:22.381 [SPEAKER_01]: And it seems like he's kind of become content with this his law in life. 01:22.642 --> 01:24.284 [SPEAKER_01]: He's 80 years old now. 01:25.366 --> 01:26.187 [SPEAKER_01]: And he's a shepherd. 01:26.988 --> 01:32.796 [SPEAKER_01]: And he approaches horror, the mountain of God, Sinai is another name for this mountain. 01:34.075 --> 01:38.099 [SPEAKER_01]: But as he approaches it, the angel of the Lord responds, here I am. 01:54.677 --> 02:03.407 [SPEAKER_01]: Now this response is something we see in Scripture over and over when the Lord appears, the Lord appeared to Abram, 02:03.691 --> 02:12.484 [SPEAKER_01]: to Jacob and Jacob responded here I am and he will appear to Samuel and Samuel will say here I am Lord, speak. 02:13.786 --> 02:20.075 [SPEAKER_01]: He also appears to Isaiah, Isaiah Lord 02:32.513 --> 02:41.849 [SPEAKER_01]: what he wants Moses to do, how he is going to sin Moses to Egypt to go and confront Pharaoh about letting Israel go. 02:41.909 --> 02:47.518 [SPEAKER_01]: Moses starts being concerned as you can sympathize, I think. 02:48.410 --> 02:52.776 [SPEAKER_01]: And his response to God after God commissions him is who am I? 02:53.096 --> 02:54.638 [SPEAKER_01]: or if I go, he says, if I go to Egypt and start speaking to Israelites and say, your God has sent me to you, how am I supposed to introduce you? 03:38.035 --> 03:38.936 [SPEAKER_01]: What is your name? 03:39.737 --> 03:40.439 [SPEAKER_01]: What is your name? 03:41.320 --> 03:43.003 [SPEAKER_01]: And the Lord answers, 03:43.422 --> 03:43.983 [SPEAKER_01]: I am. 03:44.043 --> 03:49.215 [SPEAKER_01]: Tell them that I am has sent you to them. 03:49.876 --> 04:00.520 [SPEAKER_01]: And then he goes on to say, tell them that the Lord, Yahweh, the Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, that he has sent you. 04:02.137 --> 04:18.445 [SPEAKER_01]: What we will see is that in our passage today is that the Lord is going to continue this speech now, and He's going to pile on promises of His provision, of His going with Moses, promises that He's going to grant Moses success in this mission. 04:18.505 --> 04:25.157 [SPEAKER_01]: But the more promises God gives, the more Moses's fear and doubt seem to grow. 04:26.082 --> 04:32.810 [SPEAKER_01]: This is because Moses is battling within himself as to whether he is going to trust God and obey. 04:33.211 --> 04:34.713 [SPEAKER_01]: That's the battle we're seeing here. 04:34.733 --> 04:41.341 [SPEAKER_01]: It's a back and forth between Moses and God and in Moses's heart there's a battle raging. 04:41.622 --> 04:50.773 [SPEAKER_01]: God has promised much to him but he has yet to decide to choose to trust and obey God's promises. 04:51.682 --> 04:58.512 [SPEAKER_01]: And while battling within himself, Moses will raise three objections to the promises and commands of the Lord. 04:59.053 --> 05:05.302 [SPEAKER_01]: And finally, he will end by simply saying, Oh, my Lord, please send someone else. 05:06.023 --> 05:09.368 [SPEAKER_01]: That's where this conversation is headed in our passage today. 05:10.150 --> 05:15.337 [SPEAKER_01]: He begins with, here I am, and he ends with, Lord, please send someone else. 05:15.417 --> 05:17.200 [SPEAKER_01]: That's our passage this morning. 05:18.428 --> 05:24.896 [SPEAKER_01]: The Lord has honor, blessing, and joy for Moses on this path to Egypt. 05:25.597 --> 05:30.223 [SPEAKER_01]: But Moses is resisting because he fears the difficulty of the path. 05:31.124 --> 05:44.841 [SPEAKER_01]: God isn't saying this path isn't going to be difficult, but God is promising that in this path and through this path there will be honor, blessing, and joy for you, Moses. 05:45.175 --> 05:48.319 [SPEAKER_01]: but Moses fears, he is full of fear. 05:49.221 --> 05:58.714 [SPEAKER_01]: So Moses offers objections or obstacles as another way of saying it, obstacles to try and avoid the pain of obedience. 05:59.034 --> 06:00.477 [SPEAKER_01]: That's what's happening in our passage. 06:01.378 --> 06:08.668 [SPEAKER_01]: And for us this morning, I want you to see the three obstacles that Moses throws up 06:08.952 --> 06:13.840 [SPEAKER_01]: or puts out there in front of this path that God is calling Him to. 06:13.880 --> 06:19.409 [SPEAKER_01]: Moses is going to offer three obstacles to His own joy. 06:19.429 --> 06:30.927 [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm hoping that all of us sitting here this morning will see that these are three obstacles to our joy, to your joy, that many of us. 06:30.907 --> 06:36.600 [SPEAKER_01]: frequently put out in front of of Israel together and say to them, the Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac and of Jacob has appeared to me saying, I have observed you in what has been done to you in Egypt. promises from God. 12:35.255 --> 12:38.200 [SPEAKER_01]: God says, I promise to bring you out of Egypt. 12:38.921 --> 12:41.726 [SPEAKER_01]: I promise to give you the coveted land of Canaan. 12:42.367 --> 12:48.456 [SPEAKER_01]: I promise the elders of Israel will listen to you and go with you to the King of Egypt. 12:49.258 --> 12:51.902 [SPEAKER_01]: I promise Pharaoh will not let Israel go. 12:51.942 --> 12:58.613 [SPEAKER_01]: Until I compel him with my mighty hand, then he will let them go. 12:58.829 --> 13:07.113 [SPEAKER_01]: and fifth, I promise to give Israel favor with the Egyptians and the women of Israel will plunder Egypt. 13:07.615 --> 13:11.927 [SPEAKER_01]: That, to my knowledge, had never happened before in history. 13:12.363 --> 13:15.688 [SPEAKER_01]: that the women of a society went in plunder their enemies. 13:16.129 --> 13:39.687 [SPEAKER_01]: It's always through the might of the military invasion, conquering that the men go and plunder their adversaries, but God says, I'm going to win this battle with Pharaoh and Egypt to the point that even though the women of Israel are going to go in plunder the Egyptians and close your sons and daughters, emperors and gold and silver and jewels. 13:41.759 --> 13:50.673 [SPEAKER_01]: God is saying to Moses, here's the path he must follow now go, and I promise to go with you and grant you success. 13:52.115 --> 13:56.001 [SPEAKER_01]: But Moses' heart is not yet heading in the right direction. 13:56.061 --> 14:04.033 [SPEAKER_01]: Moses is entirely focused on the pain of the past and the fear of what future outcomes might happen. 14:04.754 --> 14:06.737 [SPEAKER_01]: Focusing on the fear of the past, 14:07.139 --> 14:10.559 [SPEAKER_01]: We must realize that Egypt represents nothing but pain for Moses. 14:10.600 --> 14:11.867 [SPEAKER_01]: Just think about this for a second. 14:12.927 --> 14:19.455 [SPEAKER_01]: For 40 years, he battled the temptations to sin amongst the royal court of Egypt. 14:20.056 --> 14:36.275 [SPEAKER_01]: Every temptation was offered to him, and he fought for 40 years to not take the name of Pharaoh's daughter, not to be known as one of the princes of Egypt who enjoyed all of the temptations and sins of Egypt. 14:36.295 --> 14:38.378 [SPEAKER_01]: That's what the New Testament tells us. 14:38.358 --> 14:53.714 [SPEAKER_01]: But that's a painful road to walk, to live in the midst of vanity fair and daily wake up and say, no, no, no, I believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, I cannot walk this path of an Egyptian. 14:54.175 --> 14:55.117 [SPEAKER_01]: That is painful. 14:55.478 --> 14:56.400 [SPEAKER_01]: It is difficult. 14:57.460 --> 15:03.107 [SPEAKER_01]: Also, it was an Egypt when he was 40 years old that he took matters in his own hands. 15:03.147 --> 15:09.234 [SPEAKER_01]: He thought he was going to be able to deliver Israel with the might of his own hands, and he murdered an Egyptian. 15:10.135 --> 15:10.796 [SPEAKER_01]: He murdered him. 15:12.518 --> 15:15.321 [SPEAKER_01]: Now, if he returns to Egypt, he will be put to death. 15:15.381 --> 15:16.102 [SPEAKER_01]: That's what he's thinking. 15:17.264 --> 15:26.775 [SPEAKER_01]: And on top of all of this, the people he hoped to rescue the Hebrews, the Israelites, they rejected him as their savior. 15:26.924 --> 15:31.849 [SPEAKER_01]: as the Redeemer, they rejected him and then betrayed him to the Egyptians. 15:32.290 --> 15:37.035 [SPEAKER_01]: They said, are you going to murder me like you murdered that Egyptian the other day? 15:37.055 --> 15:46.004 [SPEAKER_01]: And they said it in such a way that the other Egyptian standing around the other Egyptian guards heard it and took the report back to Pharaoh, this is a betrayal. 15:48.407 --> 15:56.475 [SPEAKER_01]: If I were Moses, and I had had 40 years just to nod on that in the wilderness. 15:57.113 --> 16:00.197 [SPEAKER_01]: I know what I would be tempted to feel and think. 16:01.558 --> 16:08.186 [SPEAKER_01]: I would be tempted to bitterly think they can stay in the hell of Egypt for all I care. 16:09.347 --> 16:13.392 [SPEAKER_01]: There is nothing that could compel me to go back to Egypt. 16:14.553 --> 16:22.142 [SPEAKER_01]: That's what I would be tempted to think at least for 40 years and just let that bitterness just know away of my heart. 16:22.308 this point, but we do know he does not want to go back to Egypt. 16:36.986 --> 16:45.497 [SPEAKER_01]: The emotions of bitterness towards betrayal and pain are common to men. 16:46.793 --> 16:53.704 [SPEAKER_01]: And Moses has had 40 years to cement whatever he's feeling in his heart, and to determine in his heart never to go back. 16:54.746 --> 17:00.796 [SPEAKER_01]: But now the Lord appears to him and commands him to go, to Egypt, go. 17:00.816 --> 17:06.405 [SPEAKER_01]: This is why Moses raises his first objection. 17:06.925 --> 17:08.968 [SPEAKER_01]: the moment the Lord finishes His promises. 17:09.488 --> 17:12.412 [SPEAKER_01]: So the Lord's been giving promise after promise after promise. 17:12.993 --> 17:18.521 [SPEAKER_01]: But the whole time the Lord's speaking, Moses and his heart is saying, I don't want to. 17:19.742 --> 17:20.964 [SPEAKER_01]: I promise I wouldn't. 17:21.505 --> 17:23.047 [SPEAKER_01]: I have no intention. 17:23.087 --> 17:25.230 [SPEAKER_01]: There glance, this might seem like Moses is simply asking for some sides. 17:47.393 --> 17:48.295 [SPEAKER_01]: Can you help me out? 17:48.755 --> 17:51.098 [SPEAKER_01]: Because when I go, I'm gonna need some help to convince them. 17:51.118 --> 17:52.220 [SPEAKER_01]: They're gonna be hard to convince. 17:52.921 --> 17:56.286 [SPEAKER_01]: So you might think of it that way or might seem that we would finished saying in a promise and they will listen to your voice. 18:11.078 --> 18:12.619 [SPEAKER_01]: That's what God had just promised. 18:13.220 --> 18:14.982 [SPEAKER_01]: They will listen to your voice. 18:16.263 --> 18:23.330 [SPEAKER_01]: So Moses' response here is first objection is evidence of unbelief. 18:24.150 --> 18:27.754 [SPEAKER_01]: God has promised and Moses has said, no, they won't. 18:28.695 --> 18:30.156 [SPEAKER_01]: They will not listen to me. 18:31.655 --> 18:41.465 [SPEAKER_01]: He is so afraid of going back to Egypt that he directly contradicts God, arguing with God that God's understanding of the facts is mistaken. 18:43.247 --> 18:49.173 [SPEAKER_01]: This is the first and greatest obstacle to human joy, unbelief. 18:50.274 --> 19:01.105 [SPEAKER_01]: This is what I would argue, the greatest joy, the greatest obstacle to your joy, unbelief. 19:01.608 --> 19:04.632 [SPEAKER_01]: You can describe unbelief in a couple different ways. 19:04.692 --> 19:09.880 [SPEAKER_01]: Two ways you could describe it is either believing a lie. 19:09.900 --> 19:16.068 [SPEAKER_01]: So that's saying in one way you're believing a lie, or you're not believing the truth.
