The scriptures are full of stories about men and women who face terrifying circumstances, terrifying circumstances. 01:06.986 --> 01:08.928 [SPEAKER_01]: Your thoughts might go to Moses. 01:10.118 --> 01:17.440 [SPEAKER_01]: as he returned to Egypt and shuffled his feet into the throne room of Pharaoh. 01:18.120 --> 01:31.124 [SPEAKER_01]: Think about it, gold everywhere, high ceilings, the pagan gods staring down at Moses, they're statue staring down at him as he shuffled into the throne room. 01:31.164 --> 01:33.625 [SPEAKER_01]: The man who said to God, I can't speak. 01:34.605 --> 01:37.546 [SPEAKER_01]: How can I go before Pharaoh and speak to him? 01:38.638 --> 01:48.964 [SPEAKER_01]: And then he approaches the throne of the king of Egypt with the message of coming destruction and a demand to let God's people go. 01:48.984 --> 01:58.730 [SPEAKER_01]: It is a terrifying circumstance for someone who had spent 40 years in the wilderness as a shepherd in the an open plane where on the other side of the plane there is over 1,000 Philistines who are hot with rage and they want to murder this man and he is bound and he is being led with thousands of men of Judah behind him. 02:24.718 --> 02:25.919 [SPEAKER_01]: They're not his ally. 02:25.939 --> 02:28.380 [SPEAKER_01]: They've bound him to hand him over. 02:29.498 --> 02:36.340 [SPEAKER_01]: and with over a thousand angry Philistines of front of him, Samson is marched into the open field. 02:38.380 --> 02:44.202 [SPEAKER_01]: David, sprinting toward Goliath in the valley of Ilat, is definitely a favorite. 02:44.902 --> 02:46.542 [SPEAKER_01]: We all, we all know that story. 02:46.562 --> 02:52.364 [SPEAKER_01]: You can think of that terrifying circumstance, yet David running forward. 02:53.444 --> 02:57.325 [SPEAKER_01]: But a story that is very, where was very impactful and still is to this day for me, 02:58.986 --> 03:12.157 [SPEAKER_01]: is the showdown on Mount Caramel with Elijah as he faced down 850 false prophets of ball and Ashera. 03:14.359 --> 03:21.364 [SPEAKER_01]: And in that story God vindicated this soul prophet by sinning down fire from heaven. 03:22.005 --> 03:25.608 [SPEAKER_01]: That one always gave me goosebumps as I wrote about it and thought about it. 03:27.225 --> 03:38.392 [SPEAKER_01]: And we shouldn't forget about the courage of Esther, as she approached the royal throne of King Ahasuarez, knowing that she did so upon pain of death. 03:38.592 --> 03:45.716 [SPEAKER_01]: She walked in there knowing it was forbidden, as she had not been 03:56.625 --> 04:00.646 [SPEAKER_01]: for the lies of God's people, we shouldn't forget about these stories. 04:02.387 --> 04:12.030 [SPEAKER_01]: These stories and many others like them speak of the courage of those who stepped forward because of their confident hope in the Lord their God. 04:12.831 --> 04:13.971 [SPEAKER_01]: That's why they stepped forward. 04:14.531 --> 04:23.094 [SPEAKER_01]: [SPEAKER_01]: But all of these accounts of courage in the divine, or you could say, of divine courage, because God gave them this courage, and their courage was in God. 04:35.494 --> 04:37.134 [SPEAKER_01]: So we could call it divine courage. 04:37.614 --> 04:46.236 [SPEAKER_01]: All of these stories of divine courage in the face of terrifying circumstances were laid out for God's people, [SPEAKER_01]: Because now here in John, chapter 18, Jesus steps forward to face the powers of hell. 05:13.280 --> 05:15.221 [SPEAKER_01]: That's what we're reading about this morning. 05:15.281 --> 05:22.286 [SPEAKER_01]: So look with me in John chapter 18, beginning in verse one, how Jesus went forth. 05:24.223 --> 05:33.986 [SPEAKER_01]: When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. 05:34.786 --> 05:39.727 [SPEAKER_01]: Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place for Jesus often met there with his disciples. 05:40.787 --> 05:48.649 [SPEAKER_01]: So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns Heavenly Father, we cannot truly imagine cannot truly feel the passion and the fear, the pain of this moment unless you're Holy Spirit grants it to us. 07:49.145 --> 08:15.280 [SPEAKER_01]: So Lord, I pray this morning as we look upon Jesus that we would feel and that we would know and we would experience Lord, what you have for us in your Word, that we would look and we would love Him, that we would look at His, at the fear of facing the cross and we would feel that this morning Lord. 08:17.256 --> 08:26.019 [SPEAKER_01]: that we would feel and know what it is like to be redeemed, to be purchased, to be saved. 08:26.960 --> 08:33.562 [SPEAKER_01]: Now, these wouldn't just be theological words that we study out of a textbook, but that these would be the truth. 08:33.882 --> 08:39.144 words of God this morning. 08:47.639 --> 09:02.806 [SPEAKER_01]: that you would impart to us the ability to love Jesus, to delight in our Savior who is both courageous, yet also as the one who went [SPEAKER_01]: Amen. 09:11.691 --> 09:14.052 [SPEAKER_01]: When the Apostle John was near the end of his 09:15.349 --> 09:20.871 [SPEAKER_01]: He was granted or he was shown the revelation of Jesus Christ. 09:21.911 --> 09:38.135 [SPEAKER_01]: And in this revelation, John sees the Lord Almighty seated on his throne in heaven with a scroll in his hand, which if opened, if this scroll is opened, it will unleash the end of the age. 09:38.835 --> 09:40.816 [SPEAKER_01]: That's what's happening in Revelation. 09:41.907 --> 09:45.189 [SPEAKER_01]: as the Lord sits on His throne with the scroll in His hand. 09:46.530 --> 09:55.417 [SPEAKER_01]: And then we read that a mighty angel asks the question, who is worthy to open the scroll and to break its seals? 09:57.158 --> 10:09.547 [SPEAKER_01]: That as John looks around, he sees that no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it. 10:11.196 --> 10:12.877 [SPEAKER_01]: and he's sorrowful about this. 10:14.599 --> 10:27.910 [SPEAKER_01]: And as he begins to lose hope that the glory of God, which is hidden in this scroll that it will never be shown that it will never come to light when he begins to lose hope. 10:29.010 --> 10:34.315 [SPEAKER_01]: Another one comes to him and says to John weep no more 10:35.137 --> 10:47.447 [SPEAKER_01]: behold, the lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David has conquered so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals. 10:48.588 --> 10:50.209 [SPEAKER_01]: That is what John hears. 10:50.249 --> 10:55.253 [SPEAKER_01]: He's told by another that the lion has conquered. 10:56.634 --> 11:03.680 [SPEAKER_01]: But then when he turns back to the throne to look, he sees with his eyes something very surprising. 11:05.389 --> 11:19.398 [SPEAKER_01]: It says this, and between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders, I saw a lamb standing as though it had been slain, that's all from Revelation 5. 11:21.119 --> 11:28.544 [SPEAKER_01]: A lamb standing as though it had been slain, think it's neck cut with 11:29.231 --> 11:34.975 [SPEAKER_01]: red blood stained into its fur into its wool. 11:37.717 --> 11:50.585 [SPEAKER_01]: He hears John hears that the mighty lion, liking who has conquered, he has conquered, but then he looks and sees a slaughtered lamb standing. 11:52.866 --> 11:53.567 [SPEAKER_01]: Both are true. 11:54.568 --> 11:55.148 [SPEAKER_01]: Both are true. 11:56.255 --> 12:18.628 [SPEAKER_01]: Jesus is both the bold and courageous lion who goes forth into battle and he is the lamb who silently was led to slaughter both these things are true in one person and I believe this truth about the lion and the lamb is what John is aiming at in our passage this morning. 12:19.546 --> 12:26.672 [SPEAKER_01]: As Jesus goes forth to face the powers of hell, He goes forth as the lion and the lamb. 12:27.373 --> 12:29.995 [SPEAKER_01]: So first, let's look at how He is the lion. 12:31.436 --> 12:45.388 [SPEAKER_01]: Notice with me verse one, after His words of teaching the disciples and His prayer to God the Father were finished, it says He went out with His disciples across the book, Brook Kidron, where there was a garden. 12:46.530 --> 12:49.451 [SPEAKER_01]: This garden would be the place of testing. 12:50.051 --> 12:59.232 [SPEAKER_01]: The place where Jesus and His humanity would be tempted to follow or to seek His own will rather than the fathers. 12:59.573 --> 13:09.194 [SPEAKER_01]: That was the temptation of the garden to save His life and to avoid all this suffering rather than to follow the fathers will. 13:10.235 --> 13:12.095 [SPEAKER_01]: This wasn't a garden of rest. 13:13.653 --> 13:20.755 [SPEAKER_01]: Usually, we think at the back of our houses, we try to make gardens where we can rest and kind of escape for just a moment from the chaos of the world. 13:21.115 --> 13:24.836 [SPEAKER_01]: But that is not what this garden was for Jesus on this night. 13:25.496 --> 13:29.257 [SPEAKER_01]: This would be the place he would sweat drops of blood. 13:30.438 --> 13:34.899 [SPEAKER_01]: That was the intensity of his temptation and suffering in his soul. 13:36.099 --> 13:37.680 [SPEAKER_01]: Yet knowing all of this, 13:39.523 --> 14:04.138 [SPEAKER_01]: it knowing that he would be tempted in the garden and that his hour had come knowing all of this the passage says he steps toward the danger he went out across the brook toward the temptation as one translation says in verse one he went forth in English you can hear him charging into battle in that translation 14:05.143 --> 14:10.728 [SPEAKER_01]: Like a lion moving toward his enemy, moving forward to face his enemy. 14:11.368 --> 14:19.775 [SPEAKER_01]: Jesus went out into the night to be tempted to the point of death were told, that was the depth of suffering in the garden. 14:20.115 --> 14:26.581 [SPEAKER_01]: He said, my soul is sorrowful to the point of death in the garden of Geth Simony. 14:26.901 --> 14:27.922 [SPEAKER_01]: He tells us a Matthew. 14:29.143 --> 14:31.665 [SPEAKER_01]: This was all as his betrayer drew in here. 14:33.727 --> 14:39.189 [SPEAKER_01]: John has been telling us all along that Judas is the disciple who would betray Jesus. 14:39.870 --> 14:43.491 [SPEAKER_01]: And now the moment has finally arrived in the gospel according to John. 14:44.772 --> 14:55.516 [SPEAKER_01]: And we're told that Jesus knowing what was going to happen, he patiently waits for Jesus to lead a mob of soldiers and officials up the slope of Get Simony. 14:56.447 --> 15:02.910 [SPEAKER_01]: The mob went up the hill with lanterns and torches were told, which would have clearly revealed their coming. 15:02.990 --> 15:06.411 [SPEAKER_01]: Some estimate there were several hundred people coming up that slope. 15:07.591 --> 15:13.254 [SPEAKER_01]: This was not a well executed ambush which Jesus didn't see coming. 15:14.294 --> 15:16.095 [SPEAKER_01]: John is clear to reveal that. 15:18.095 --> 15:22.117 [SPEAKER_01]: But by this point in the garden, we're told in Luke. 15:22.735 --> 15:39.582 [SPEAKER_01]: that Jesus has already prayed to His Father during the temptation and at the end of the temptation to flee this pain and suffering, we're told that Jesus has already prayed to His Father not my will, your will be done. 15:41.523 --> 15:47.966 [SPEAKER_01]: So Jesus waits for His friend who comes and betrays Him with a kiss. 15:52.077 --> 15:58.502 [SPEAKER_01]: Knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to the mob, whom do you seek? 16:00.323 --> 16:07.409 [SPEAKER_01]: Even though Jesus already knows the horrors that awaited him, he didn't hide behind his disciples. 16:07.929 --> 16:09.210 [SPEAKER_01]: Now, Jesus steps forward as the tip of the spear with his disciples behind him. 17:11.870 --> 17:13.211 [SPEAKER_01]: Think of Jesus at the front. 17:13.251 --> 17:14.211 [SPEAKER_01]: victory over. 17:40.975 --> 17:55.764 [SPEAKER_01]: We're told that in Hebrews 415, if you doubt that Jesus can feel the suffering or the temptation or the pain or the sorrow that you are experiencing right now, go and look at Hebrews 4 verse 15. 17:56.124 --> 17:59.967 [SPEAKER_01]: He was tempted and he suffered in every way. 18:01.265 --> 18:08.047 [SPEAKER_01]: yet without sin, he was victorious and hopeful in God through it all. 18:09.607 --> 18:16.329 [SPEAKER_01]: Jesus is the tip of the spear of God, which is his church. 18:16.529 --> 18:17.650 [SPEAKER_01]: Think about that for a second. 18:19.410 --> 18:28.293 [SPEAKER_01]: The spear of God, his weapon in his war is his people, his church, the congregation of God, 18:29.891 --> 18:39.059 [SPEAKER_01]: And Jesus is the tip of that spear, and this spear is thrown into the battle by the Holy Spirit, by the power of the Holy Spirit. 18:39.980 --> 18:41.121 [SPEAKER_01]: Jesus is the tip. 18:41.818 --> 18:43.179 where the most ferocious warriors were and where death was certain because he charged into the battle lines of sin and death. 19:00.673 --> 19:02.735 [SPEAKER_01]: That's what's happening on this night in 19:12.175 --> 19:13.556 [SPEAKER_01]: the battle lines of sin and death. 19:14.917 --> 19:21.601 [SPEAKER_01]: My friends, Jesus has already faced the heat of the battle, the hottest part of the war. 19:22.722 --> 19:28.405 [SPEAKER_01]: On this day, two thousand years ago, death lost its sting were told. 19:29.286 --> 19:41.013 [SPEAKER_01]: Death lost its sting because the power of sin was defeated when the lion of the tribe of Judah came forward, stepped forward when he went forth. 19:41.654 --> 19:50.117 [SPEAKER_01]: As Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 15, saying, death is our passage that the lion steps forward and asks the mob whom do you seek? 20:41.555 --> 20:50.177 [SPEAKER_01]: They say in verse five, they answer him, Jesus of Nazareth bold and arrogant as if he [SPEAKER_01]: Surely a few hundred men with lanterns and torches and swords would be able to defeat the 11 disciples if they put up a resistance and surely they could bind one man. 21:24.059 --> [SPEAKER_01]: Human beings with pointy sticks are confidantly moving into position to subdue the one John has been so diligent to reveal as the great I am. 22:43.779 --> 22:45.659 [SPEAKER_01]: The scene reminds me of Isaiah 31 verse 4. 22:45.799 --> 22:53.502 [SPEAKER_01]: Or Isaiah writes, for thus the Lord said to me, these are the Lord's words. 22:54.710 --> 23:15.720 [SPEAKER_01]: As a lion or a young lion growls over his prey, and when a band of shepherds is called out against him, he is not terrified by their shouting or dented by their noise, so the Lord of hosts will come down to fight on Mount Zion in on its hill. 23:22.603 --> 23:36.885 [SPEAKER_01]: Come to subdue the lion of the tribe of Judah, who John has revealed to be the Lord of hosts, who had come down to fight on
