Pastor Scott Gray spoke these words to the congregation of Liberty Baptist Church in Durham, North Carolina, shortly after announcing his resignation on September 10, 2025. 01:22.643 --> 01:34.608 [SPEAKER_00]: In his less than 13-minute statement, Gray admitted that church finances were in disarray, that loans have been taken out without board knowledge, and that his failure to supervise staff 03:12.386 --> 03:29.859 [SPEAKER_00]: For those of you that are listening, a balloon note is a type of loan where the bar were makes relatively small payments, often just covering the interest or partial amount of the principle over the life of the loan, and then owes a large balloon payment of the 03:31.440 --> 03:31.780 [SPEAKER_00]: the end. 03:32.161 --> 03:41.307 [SPEAKER_00]: He attempted to reassure members citing account balances totaling just over $1 million, which by comparison made the outstanding balances seem small. 03:41.867 --> 03:48.452 [SPEAKER_00]: However, on September 14th, 2025, the Church's leadership team told a very different story. 03:49.172 --> 03:53.794 [SPEAKER_00]: Daniel Morrissey, the church music pastor, ready-prepared statement from the leadership team. 03:54.354 --> 04:06.178 [SPEAKER_00]: It painted a picture of extensive financial mismanagement and raised questions surrounding the ethics of Scott Gray's leadership and the who are close to the church have estimated that the amount of loans and credit card charges were in the six figures, but I have not been able to confirm an exact number with the church and they didn't Derek Kettner announces resignation, citing financial and ethical issues. 07:52.295 --> 07:59.040 [SPEAKER_00]: Elite copy of the resignation letter, tended by Kettner, began circulating shortly after [SPEAKER_00]: I've served the Lord and the people of Liberty Baptist Church and the teachers, parents, and students of Liberty Christian School for 39 years have been a faithful and loyal employee. 08:16.129 --> 08:25.676 [SPEAKER_00]: However, just recently I have both seen and been made aware of some situations both financial and ethical that I believe are wrong and do not exemplify Christ. Baptist Church, effective immediately. 08:37.984 --> 08:43.168 [SPEAKER_00]: Now the erosion of trust and gray as a leader began months earlier before all of this unfolded. 08:43.883 --> 08:53.767 [SPEAKER_00]: On May 20, 2025, Grace Brother-in-law, associate pastor and financial director Timothy Forty, died by suicide after an allegation of abuse surfaced. 08:54.247 --> 09:02.171 [SPEAKER_00]: The abuse took place during his time at a manual Baptist church in Longview, Texas, which is pastured by Bob Gray II, Scott Gray's Brother. 09:02.871 --> 09:11.659 [SPEAKER_00]: I interviewed Gray about this incident when it happened and he presented himself as the one willing to pursue truth and as having a desire for transparency. 09:12.319 --> 09:20.306 [SPEAKER_00]: Yet, Liberty's leadership has made it explicitly clear that in the wake of 4G's death, their confidence and Gray actually began to fracture. 09:21.026 --> 09:27.112 [SPEAKER_00]: By June 2025, he was already facing scrutiny over his handling of finances and staff accountability. 09:27.772 --> 09:35.076 [SPEAKER_00]: And on September 6, 2025, the Board of Trustees formally voted that Gray had disqualified himself
