this morning. 02:54.950 --> 03:07.433 [SPEAKER_01]: We reminded in this passage that the world is an enemy of Christ and as a believers in Christ, the world is also an enemy to us. 03:08.874 --> speak the truth about the gospel or some aspect of the biblical morality or truth, we sometimes are surprised about the opposition that comes from the world. 03:37.233 --> 03:42.315 [SPEAKER_01]: You see the world would seek to mold us into its own image 03:43.798 --> 03:51.081 [SPEAKER_01]: But the Spirit of God is at work in us to mold us into the image of Christ. 03:52.821 --> 04:00.984 and the thinking and values of the world, we're going to be out of step with the Spirit of God. 04:11.964 --> 04:19.986 [SPEAKER_01]: Well, this is why Jesus says there in verse thirty three in the [SPEAKER_01]: Well, with the soon arrest of Christ and the hasty trial and the crucifixion, it would seem like the world has won the victory. 04:51.490 --> 04:55.674 [SPEAKER_01]: But Jesus tells us the disciples that He has overcome the world. 04:58.331 --> 05:03.654 [SPEAKER_01]: And this victory that Jesus speaks of is so certain that he speaks of it in the past tense. 05:04.434 --> 05:07.215 [SPEAKER_01]: And if I put that on the screen for you, you would recognize it as one of the leading 05:27.546 --> 05:33.548 [SPEAKER_01]: sports brands in the world, the Nike, and it simply means victory. 05:35.248 --> 05:37.109 [SPEAKER_01]: And that's what Jesus has won for us. 05:38.469 --> 05:51.153 [SPEAKER_01]: In Christ, we have victory, ultimate victory in the end when we're with the Lord, but also victory today in our lives as we enable 05:52.974 --> 06:01.017 [SPEAKER_01]: God to work in our lives and through us by His Spirit we are able to live in the victory that He has won says, who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 06:42.332 --> 06:44.374 [SPEAKER_01]: Well, Jesus in this 06:46.616 --> 07:15.325 [SPEAKER_01]: long passage from really from chapter thirteen we refer to it as the farewell discourse he has been revealing to them that there's a new era coming Jesus is soon going away and he's going to die and return to the Father but in his death he will defeat the power of Satan 07:16.980 --> 07:28.964 [SPEAKER_01]: And He is going to remove the condemnation that is up on us and death, the eternal death, for all of us who have put our faith and trust in Him. 07:29.944 --> 07:43.048 [SPEAKER_01]: He also has been promising the coming of the Spirit of God that is like Him and will be with us, like He has been speaking these things through disciples, especially in this upper room discourse, but really even His whole ministry, many of the things they did not understand. 08:06.149 --> 08:12.232 [SPEAKER_01]: They fully didn't fully comprehend what Jesus was saying many times and they would ask and 08:13.023 --> 08:22.428 [SPEAKER_01]: Jesus would explain, but I'm not sure that even after the explanation, they fully understood many of the things that Jesus was saying. 08:26.309 --> 08:36.694 [SPEAKER_01]: And so Jesus has been telling these things ahead of time so that they will be warned. 08:37.655 twenty-five to thirty-three, he gives three important truths that belong to us that are in Christ. 08:54.303 --> 08:55.204 [SPEAKER_01]: They're not new things. 08:55.264 --> 09:08.790 [SPEAKER_01]: He's been saying similar kind of things before, but now Jesus brings this reminder, this closing statements to them, 09:10.030 --> 09:15.234 [SPEAKER_01]: in this section to bring an end really to this is teaching in this discourse. 09:16.435 --> 09:24.400 [SPEAKER_01]: And he's using it to encourage them and therefore us also to encourage us and to acknowledge us in our faith. 09:25.461 --> 09:29.584 [SPEAKER_01]: So let's look together at these things first of all. 09:31.828 --> 09:35.650 [SPEAKER_01]: We have a relationship with God the Father because of Christ. 09:35.730 --> 09:38.512 no longer speak to you in figures of speech, it will tell you plainly about the Father. 09:59.044 --> 10:00.305 [SPEAKER_01]: So he's talking about 10:01.053 --> 10:11.060 [SPEAKER_01]: an increased knowledge of the Father without God's revelation to us. 10:11.840 --> 10:14.282 [SPEAKER_01]: We would not be able to know God. 10:15.002 --> 10:17.624 [SPEAKER_01]: We wouldn't be able to have a relationship with Him. 10:19.525 --> 10:30.232 [SPEAKER_01]: When Jesus came, He wasn't like just like the prophets of old who told about Jesus and gave prophecy in mornings and so forth. 10:30.838 --> 10:38.164 [SPEAKER_01]: But Jesus was the very embodiment of God as the revelation of the Father. 10:38.925 --> 10:41.787 [SPEAKER_01]: He was the Emmanuel of the God with us. 10:44.829 --> 10:52.656 [SPEAKER_01]: Remember, back to chapter one, John verse X, he says, no one has seen God at any time. 10:53.617 --> 10:58.861 [SPEAKER_01]: The only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, he has explained him. 11:00.842 --> 11:13.712 [SPEAKER_01]: And then again, in chapter twelve, verse forty-four, and following he says, and Jesus cried out and said, whoever believes in me believes not in me, but in him who sent me. 11:14.873 --> 11:18.876 [SPEAKER_01]: And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. 11:19.997 --> 11:26.743 [SPEAKER_01]: I have come into the world as light so that those who believe in me may not remain in the darkness. 11:28.850 --> 11:41.073 [SPEAKER_01]: And so Jesus is the revelation of God the Father, and He's been speaking to them, but in this, as He calls it, figures of speech. 11:41.473 --> 11:44.953 [SPEAKER_01]: And that word really can refer to the parables. 11:45.053 --> 11:53.835 [SPEAKER_01]: It can refer to the different kinds of metaphors that He uses, much like you see in the Old Testament with the Psalms and Proverbs. 11:54.816 --> 11:56.756 [SPEAKER_01]: Those would come under this heading 11:58.078 --> 12:02.622 [SPEAKER_01]: And a lot of, as we said, a lot of what he said, the people didn't understand. 12:02.682 --> 12:12.309 [SPEAKER_01]: And even the disciples were often just a bit confused and weren't really able to completely grasp what he was referring to. 12:13.410 --> 12:17.513 [SPEAKER_01]: And part of that reason is they were not ready to understand. 12:19.134 --> 12:26.700 [SPEAKER_01]: And part of the reason was that Christ was not ready to completely reveal all that 12:27.867 --> 12:29.007 [SPEAKER_01]: He was teaching them. 12:30.668 --> 12:54.797 [SPEAKER_01]: But after his death and resurrection, now they are ready and he's ready for them to come into a full understanding of the gospel of what Jesus came to do and what he had accomplished for them in salvation and the sanctification 12:55.824 --> 12:58.905 [SPEAKER_01]: all that God has done for us. 13:00.005 --> 13:07.947 [SPEAKER_01]: And so after the resurrection, Jesus begins to teach them on a different level of understanding of what they had before. 13:09.188 --> 13:23.772 [SPEAKER_01]: You remember, moved out in Luke, twenty-four, and that passage where Jesus meets up with the two that's on the road to Amaz after the death of Christ and they are very sad and 13:24.445 --> 13:32.729 [SPEAKER_01]: talking about the things that have happened and Jesus comes along and joins them and it doesn't reveal himself to them as who he is. 13:34.289 --> 13:42.793 [SPEAKER_01]: But in verse twenty seven says, then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, there was the Old Testament. 13:43.013 --> 13:53.258 [SPEAKER_01]: So in one way of referring to all of the Old Testament, he says he interpreted to them the things concerning himself in all the scriptures. 13:55.122 --> 13:58.064 [SPEAKER_01]: That's an incredible thought there is. 13:58.144 --> 14:04.729 [SPEAKER_01]: You think about Jesus revealing to them the things in the Scripture that they had not seen. 14:05.350 --> 14:09.152 [SPEAKER_01]: They didn't understand, but that it pointed to Christ. 14:10.233 --> 14:22.682 [SPEAKER_01]: And as promised, the Holy Spirit came and asked to in dwell the believers and everyone who puts their faith in trust and Christ receives the Spirit of God 14:25.312 --> 14:40.420 [SPEAKER_01]: who comes and dwells literally within us and He enables us to understand God's Word and to grow in our relationship and our understanding of God and what He's done for us. 14:41.721 --> 14:53.327 [SPEAKER_01]: A second part of this relationship that changes is direct access to the Father through Jesus Christ and in prayer. 14:55.793 --> 15:21.867 [SPEAKER_01]: verse twenty six notice he says on that day you will ask in my name and I do not say to you that I will request of the father in your behalf for the father himself loves you and because you have loved me and have believed that I came forth from the father I came forth from the father and have come into the world I am leaving the world again and going to the father 15:24.149 --> 15:28.993 [SPEAKER_01]: Well, in the Old Testament, God had revealed Himself to Israel as a father. 15:30.794 --> 15:44.424 [SPEAKER_01]: But we don't see believers praying to God as a father, not especially not in a personal way, like Jesus does in the way He teaches them. 15:48.426 --> 15:52.329 [SPEAKER_01]: Because of the sinfulness of man and the holiness of God, there is a separation 15:53.728 --> 15:56.810 [SPEAKER_01]: and there's a need for a mediator between God and man. 15:58.872 --> 16:15.323 [SPEAKER_01]: And especially when you get to the time of the nation of being established, you see that God established the sacrificial system, the priesthood and the temple, all is means of the people being able to approach God. 16:17.605 --> 16:22.028 [SPEAKER_01]: And in many ways, you see all of this being done 16:22.785 --> 16:27.809 [SPEAKER_01]: so that the people recognize that God is holy and they are sinful. 16:30.531 --> 16:36.395 [SPEAKER_01]: And so there is this huge chasm between God and man. 16:38.837 --> 16:50.165 [SPEAKER_01]: And God has come near, but not so near that the people could see Him or just talk to Him casually. 16:52.435 --> 17:10.420 [SPEAKER_01]: We do see some individuals who had a close relationship with, and you see, especially before the temple was established, that people were said to have walked with God. 17:12.160 --> 17:20.162 [SPEAKER_01]: And so it wasn't that God was at arms length from people, but there was still this problem of man's sin. 17:22.172 --> 17:43.941 [SPEAKER_01]: And so we have this establishment of the sacrifices in the priesthood and the temple where the people could come and the priest, the high priest could go in and to the holy of Holies and make a Talmud for their sins. 17:45.941 --> 17:49.763 [SPEAKER_01]: But with the coming of Jesus, He brought 17:51.784 --> 17:53.345 [SPEAKER_01]: access to the Father. 17:55.305 --> 18:04.569 [SPEAKER_01]: By His death, returning to the Father, He became the mediator of a new covenant, a new relationship with the Father. 18:04.629 --> 18:09.490 [SPEAKER_01]: He is our high priest that gives us access to the Father. 18:09.510 --> 18:18.414 [SPEAKER_01]: His Jesus has been his already in these chapters told the disciples that they are now to pray in Jesus' name 18:20.927 --> 18:32.552 [SPEAKER_01]: And if you've been with us in the last few chapters, you know, that prayer in Jesus' name is not just adding on to the end of our prayer in Jesus' name. 18:34.133 --> 18:36.834 [SPEAKER_01]: No, it's the way in which we pray. 18:38.335 --> 18:39.315 [SPEAKER_01]: It's the attitude. 18:40.256 --> 18:43.037 [SPEAKER_01]: It's our way of coming to God. 18:44.097 --> 18:49.320 [SPEAKER_01]: It's in the acknowledgment of the merits of what Christ did for us. 18:50.428 --> 18:54.270 [SPEAKER_01]: is finished work on the crosses, death, burial, resurrection. 18:55.090 --> 19:04.834 [SPEAKER_01]: It's prayer that is in accordance with what Jesus wants or his will is in his name. 19:06.935 --> 19:13.758 [SPEAKER_01]: It's also for the glory of God, and if we pray according to what God wants, it is to the glory of God. 19:13.878 --> 19:18.780 [SPEAKER_01]: But it's approaching God from that perspective in Jesus' name. 19:21.080 --> 19:44.451 [SPEAKER_01]: Jesus also in this quickly here in these verses clarified that praying His name didn't mean that they prayed to Him so that He could pray to the Father as if they didn't have access to the Father or as if the Father really wasn't that interested in them. 19:46.095 --> 19:51.598 [SPEAKER_01]: And he quickly reminds them that there is this mutual love between the Father and the Son. 19:51.618 --> [SPEAKER_01]: That God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. 20:23.559 --> 20:29.623 [SPEAKER_01]: And He says, in this, He's going back to by this. 20:29.643 --> 20:33.665 [SPEAKER_01]: So what shows us the love of God? 20:35.126 --> 20:44.052 [SPEAKER_01]: He says, in this is love, not that we have loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 20:45.885 --> 20:55.428 [SPEAKER_01]: for appreciation, speaking to the satisfaction that God is satisfied with the finished work of Christ on the cross. with God. 21:07.331 --> 21:12.973 [SPEAKER_01]: And we can approach God directly now because of Jesus Christ. 21:14.994 --> 21:34.007 [SPEAKER_01]: Jesus has given us this direct access and He invites us to come into the very throne room of God into the very holy of Holies with confidence as a son approaches his father. 21:35.728 --> 21:40.011 [SPEAKER_01]: That's an amazing thing and it was something that the Jews 21:42.000 --> 21:50.442 [SPEAKER_01]: coming out of the history in the culture of the Old Testament would not have thought of or would think no that can't be. 21:52.323 --> 21:53.083 [SPEAKER_01]: We can't do that. 21:53.443 --> 22:03.386 [SPEAKER_01]: Only the high priest can approach and he must offer up sacrifices for himself and slave ball and all of these things have to be done. 22:03.506 --> 22:06.327 [SPEAKER_01]: We can't just go into the presence of God. 22:08.227 --> 22:10.328 [SPEAKER_01]: But Jesus is now introducing to them 22:11.663 --> 22:20.528 [SPEAKER_01]: And he's been demonstrating to them by his own prayer that there is a new approach to God, the Father. 22:22.129 --> 22:26.752 [SPEAKER_01]: And it's because of Christ and what he's going to accomplish for us. 22:28.693 --> 22:39.219 [SPEAKER_01]: This confidence or sometimes translated boldness does not mean though that we forget who God is. 22:41.384 --> 22:57.058 [SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't mean that we approach God just kind of clippantly, or that we don't approach Him with reverence, remembering who He is, and that we approach Him appropriately. 22:59.341 --> 23:07.468 [SPEAKER_01]: We're invited to come boldly because of Christ, but at the same time, we're still approaching a Holy God. 23:09.872 --> 23:18.159 [SPEAKER_01]: And Jesus, you remember earlier in Matthew six, one of the places where Jesus teaches them how to pray. 23:20.200 --> 23:28.787 [SPEAKER_01]: And he says, pray in this way, in verse nine, Matthew six, nine, our Father, who is in heaven, how to be your name. 23:28.807 --> 23:32.630 [SPEAKER_01]: And so he starts at our Father. 23:34.450 --> 23:40.874 [SPEAKER_01]: And again, the Jews recognized that God was a father to them, but he was really more a father to the nation. 23:41.255 --> 23:56.244 [SPEAKER_01]: And they didn't use this filial term like, you know, Abba is a way that you address your father, children, but adults as well. 24:59.959 [SPEAKER_01]: He says verse fifteen and sixteen, He who is the blessed and only sovereign, the king of kings and lord of lords, who alone has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, who no man has seen or can see, to him be honored and eternal might. 25:00.460 --> 25:00.860 [SPEAKER_01]: Amen. 25:02.861 --> 25:03.822 [SPEAKER_01]: This is our God. 25:04.574 --> 25:12.520 [SPEAKER_01]: And it's an incredible truth that in Christ, because of Christ, we can approach God. 25:12.580 --> 25:14.821 [SPEAKER_01]: We don't have to be in a temple. 25:16.082 --> 25:17.623 merits of Christ, we can, at any moment, just speak to our Father. 25:34.193 --> 25:42.877 [SPEAKER_01]: And this is an incredible privilege that I think we take for granted to we forget what a great, incredible privilege that is. 25:44.497 --> 25:51.900 [SPEAKER_01]: Well, secondly, in this passage, we see that we have confidence because of Christ of verse twenty nine. 25:53.861 --> 26:01.284
