[SPEAKER_01]: So what you'll see as the structure of Genesis 50 is there's the burial of Jacob, there's the re-restoration of Joseph's brothers and then the burial of Joseph. 04:01.867 --> 04:04.250 interested in and talking about and working on for over a year now. 04:24.597 --> 04:34.824 [SPEAKER_01]: So let's read in Genesis chapter 50 verse 1, we're picking up on a story that has just seen Jacob pass away in Genesis 49 and here's what happens next. 04:35.525 --> 04:40.378 [SPEAKER_01]: Joseph threw himself on his father and wept over him and kissed him. 04:40.358 --> 04:44.263 [SPEAKER_01]: Ben Joseph told the physicians who served him to embalm his father's body. 04:44.664 --> 04:46.086 [SPEAKER_01]: So Jacob was embalmed. 04:46.567 --> 04:52.675 [SPEAKER_01]: The embalming process took the usual 40 days and the Egyptians mourned his death for 70 days. 04:52.695 --> 04:59.364 [SPEAKER_01]: This means that he got a royal burial and it means that he was well respected in the land of Egypt. 04:59.865 --> 05:03.770 [SPEAKER_01]: They gave him this special burial with embalming like the kings would get. 05:03.790 --> 05:07.395 [SPEAKER_01]: They mourned him, the entire nation mourned him. 05:07.375 --> 05:17.301 [SPEAKER_01]: And Moses wants us to know the author of Genesis wants us to know that there was a really good relationship here between Joseph and the Egyptians and Jacob and the Egyptians. 05:17.838 --> 05:26.695 [SPEAKER_01]: Then, verse 4, when the period of mourning was over, Joseph approached Pharaoh's advisors and said, please do me this favor and speak to Pharaoh on my behalf. 05:27.457 --> 05:29.641 [SPEAKER_01]: Tell him that my father made me swear and oath. 05:29.721 --> 05:32.045 [SPEAKER_01]: He said to me, listen, I am about to die. 05:32.586 --> 05:36.594 [SPEAKER_01]: Take my body back to the land of Canaan and bury me in the tomb I prepared for myself. 05:36.634 --> 05:39.660 [SPEAKER_01]: So please allow me to go and bury my father. 05:39.640 --> 05:42.543 [SPEAKER_01]: After his burial, I will return without delay. 05:42.964 --> 05:52.774 [SPEAKER_01]: And we covered that story a couple of weeks ago, how Jacob had faith that his family would be moved by God back to the promised land one day after their time and Egypt was done. 05:53.195 --> 06:02.425 [SPEAKER_01]: Back to the place where they had all these special areas that they worshiped God, they had encounters with God, special places where they built up altar so they could worship him. 06:02.405 --> 06:06.291 [SPEAKER_01]: And where they had buried their ancestors, this land that God had promised them. 06:06.311 --> 06:10.117 [SPEAKER_01]: And so Jacob trusted that God would bring the family back there. 06:10.357 --> 06:20.894 [SPEAKER_01]: And he wanted to go ahead and be back there with his ancestors, with his relatives, and ready for some time in the future when the family would move back there and be able to visit his grave. 06:21.295 --> 06:22.236 [SPEAKER_01]: He didn't know when it would happen. 06:22.537 --> 06:24.700 [SPEAKER_01]: He just trusted that it would happen. 06:24.680 --> 06:30.654 [SPEAKER_01]: Then verse 6, Pharaoh agreed to Joseph's request, go and bury your father as he made you promise he said. 06:30.975 --> 06:32.840 [SPEAKER_01]: So Joseph went up to bury his father. 06:33.201 --> 06:41.220 [SPEAKER_01]: He was accompanied by all of Pharaoh's officials, all the senior members of Pharaoh's household, and all the senior officers of Egypt. 06:41.605 --> 06:53.557 [SPEAKER_01]: So that's three times, three different ways Moses is telling us all the important people went to be a part of this, and it's a two-week journey from Egypt to Canaan to be a part of this funeral procession, the longest funeral procession I think I've ever heard of. 06:54.098 --> 06:56.680 [SPEAKER_01]: And they're all going to be a part of it, all the high-ranking people. 06:57.441 --> 07:06.330 [SPEAKER_01]: Joseph also took his entire household and his brothers and their households, but they left their little children and flots and hurts in the land of Goshen, which means they're going to come back. 07:06.496 --> 07:29.196 [SPEAKER_01]: Again, Moses wants us to know here just how important Joseph and Jacob are to the Egyptians, the fact that every single high-ranking person except for Pharaoh himself is going to go and be a part of this funeral shows what a big deal this family had become in the land of Egypt, very, very important contrast to what's going to happen in this sequel that Moses writes in the book of Exodus. 07:29.176 --> 07:36.843 [SPEAKER_01]: where we see the bitterness and the resentment swell up in the Egyptians' turn against the Israelites, but here he wants us to know things are chariots and charioteers are company Joseph. 07:43.649 --> 07:50.055 [SPEAKER_01]: When they arrived at the Threshing Floor of a Todd near the Jordan River, they held a very great and solemn memorial thought. 08:07.555 --> 08:09.698 [SPEAKER_01]: And you get a few of those, and it's like, well, this is really nice. 08:09.738 --> 08:11.921 [SPEAKER_01]: You get 10 of those, you're like, well, I'd kind of like to eat too. 08:12.402 --> 08:14.685 [SPEAKER_01]: And then you get the people that are like, oh, I thought of another thing. 08:14.725 --> 08:16.147 [SPEAKER_01]: And it's like this is your third trip guy. 08:16.427 --> 08:19.451 [SPEAKER_01]: It's time to just let them rest and let's go eat some food. 08:19.972 --> 08:26.301 [SPEAKER_01]: So funerals can be pretty long sometimes, but this one was seven days long. 08:26.399 --> 08:28.301 [SPEAKER_01]: And there were people that were watching this. 08:28.341 --> 08:41.413 [SPEAKER_01]: So the local residents, the Kayne Knights, watched the morning at the thrashing floor of a Todd, then they renamed that place, which is near the Jordan Abel Miserim, for they said, this is a place of deep morning for the Egyptians. 08:41.473 --> 08:47.259 [SPEAKER_01]: As far as the locals knew, this was just a whole bunch of Egyptian people, like all this Egyptian royalty just showed up. 08:47.539 --> 08:49.981 [SPEAKER_01]: And this is the place where they choose to mourn why. 08:50.522 --> 08:56.187 [SPEAKER_01]: It seems so unbelievable that the Egyptians would do this. 08:56.167 --> 09:14.032 [SPEAKER_01]: hate shepherds in shepherding, and so the idea of going off two weeks into this remote place to do all of this while it shows the respect they had for Joseph and for Jacob, but it was certainly amusing for the Canaanites, but a very impressive funeral service that they held for Jacob. 09:14.573 --> 09:17.517 [SPEAKER_01]: So verse 12, Jacob's son's did as he commanded them. 09:17.682 --> 09:23.213 [SPEAKER_01]: The carried his body to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Makpaila near memory. 09:23.574 --> 09:29.586 [SPEAKER_01]: This is the cave the Abraham had bought as a permanent burial site from Ephron, the Hittite. 09:29.606 --> 09:38.003 [SPEAKER_01]: And this funeral procession and the whole service impacts the boys I think in some different ways as we see later on in the chapter. 09:38.776 --> 09:44.509 [SPEAKER_01]: For Joseph, he is clearly struck by his father's faith that the family will return there. 09:44.769 --> 09:48.397 [SPEAKER_01]: And this becomes a theme that Joseph will pick up on later in his life. 09:48.698 --> 09:57.898 [SPEAKER_01]: He trusts like his father that God is going to make good on the covenantal promise that his people will go back to the land God promised them one day. 09:57.878 --> 10:04.529 [SPEAKER_01]: they will not stay in Egypt, they will not disappear, they will not dissolve, they will not integrate with the Egyptian people and just blend and become one. 10:04.909 --> 10:10.778 [SPEAKER_01]: They will, as a distinct people, move back to this land one day and Joseph is going to take that away from this. 10:11.840 --> 10:15.065 [SPEAKER_01]: But the brothers take away something very, very different. 10:15.586 --> 10:19.252 [SPEAKER_01]: They actually become very fearful after the death of their father. 10:19.352 --> 10:19.953 [SPEAKER_01]: Why is that? 10:19.973 --> 10:24.460 [SPEAKER_01]: Look at verse 14. 10:24.642 --> 10:34.878 [SPEAKER_01]: Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all who had accompanied him to his father's burial, but now that their father was dead, Joseph's brothers became fearful. 10:35.859 --> 10:42.049 [SPEAKER_01]: Now, Joseph will show his anger and pass back for all the wrong we did to him. 10:42.129 --> 10:46.195 [SPEAKER_01]: They said, so they sent this message to Joseph. 10:47.035 --> 11:03.301 [SPEAKER_01]: Before your father died, he instructed us to say to you, please forgive your brothers for the great wrong they did to you, for their sin and treating you so cruelly, so we the servants of the God of your father beg to forgive our sin. 11:03.982 --> 11:08.349 [SPEAKER_01]: When Joseph received the message, he broke down and wept. 11:09.470 --> 11:10.792 [SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk about this message. 11:11.273 --> 11:12.435 [SPEAKER_01]: What's going on here? 11:13.478 --> 11:24.823 [SPEAKER_01]: The brothers, first of all, claim that their father gave them a special message that he didn't share directly with Joseph for some reason, asking Joseph to go ahead and forgive the brothers again. 11:25.364 --> 11:27.970 [SPEAKER_01]: Something tells me this probably didn't actually come from Jacob. 11:28.311 --> 11:30.576 [SPEAKER_01]: This is the immaturity of the brothers again. 11:30.556 --> 11:38.817 [SPEAKER_01]: who have become fearful now are worried that Joseph didn't actually forgive them and he was just kind of appeasing good old dad and now he's going to get his revenge on them. 11:39.158 --> 11:46.337 [SPEAKER_01]: And so they probably make up this story about dad saying, hey, make sure you tell Joseph to forgive you another time just in case it didn't stick. 11:46.317 --> 11:53.047 [SPEAKER_01]: But then they also say, so we, the servants of the God of Your Father, they're just laying it on thick here. 11:53.728 --> 11:55.971 [SPEAKER_01]: And Moses writes this down with great intentionality. 11:55.991 --> 12:00.658 [SPEAKER_01]: Moses does not waste a word when he is writing everything he puts in there is meant to communicate something. 12:00.898 --> 12:04.984 [SPEAKER_01]: He wants us to see that they are really putting the layers on here. 12:04.964 --> 12:11.092 [SPEAKER_01]: of, hey, you know, we have the same father and he wanted you to forgive us and he wanted you to even forgive us again. 12:11.112 --> 12:16.258 [SPEAKER_01]: And we serve the same God that our father had and you love him so much. 12:16.298 --> 12:20.423 [SPEAKER_01]: And so they're just piling on this old, please, please, please don't hurt us kind of a thing. 12:21.545 --> 12:23.207 [SPEAKER_01]: But [SPEAKER_01]: That 17 years of Joseph getting them the best land, coaching them on how to live in Egypt and how to talk with the Pharaoh, making sure that they had prosperous lives in Egypt, making sure that they and their children were all taken care of, had all the food and supplies. 12:54.117 --> 12:56.942 [SPEAKER_01]: They needed even in the midst of the famine that was going on. 12:57.192 --> 13:03.678 [SPEAKER_01]: 17 years that Joseph thought the conflict was resolved and behind them. 13:04.939 --> 13:11.905 [SPEAKER_01]: And yet, now the brothers are showing that they doubt the things that keeps you up at night, or the thing that you think about that makes it hard for you to fall asleep, or the thing that just colors a relationship with a person. 13:51.634 --> 13:53.957 given us and we hold onto that baggage of our own sin, even though we've confessed it and he has forgiven us. 14:12.810 --> 14:18.519 [SPEAKER_01]: And so the one thing for you to write down today if forgive someone, and you meant it genuinely, and they just can't seem to get over it, and they got this cloud over their head, and they bring it up at times, and they still feel bad about it, and they're almost sort of living in the shadow of that thing that they once did, because they can't get over it, then that's really an accusation, a subtle accusation, and direct accusation that maybe you don't actually forgive them after all. 15:03.923 --> 15:05.344 [SPEAKER_01]: Same thing is true with God. 15:05.364 --> 15:10.850 [SPEAKER_01]: When God washes our sins away and says, they're And so what happens is he gets this message and he breaks down tears because it blinds sighted him. 15:41.928 --> 15:43.851 [SPEAKER_01]: He had no idea they could feel this way. 15:43.871 --> 16:54.289 [SPEAKER_01]: That is a really gracious response to brothers who have just ripped open old wounds and have just basically attacked his character and said we think you might actually still come after us for that thing you said you forgave us for. 16:55.951 --> 17:05.545 [SPEAKER_01]: And Joseph's reply is so incredibly gracious and I'm actually so thankful that Moses doesn't just say, but Joseph reassured them and everything was good and they moved on. 17:06.301 --> 17:17.453 [SPEAKER_01]: Moses actually breaks apart the logic of Joseph's reasoning for how he responds to their self-centeredness and their accusation against him. 17:17.473 --> 17:19.955 [SPEAKER_01]: What they care about is themselves here. 17:19.975 --> 17:23.439 [SPEAKER_01]: And Joseph's reply is so should not have happened and those people made poor choices and God being omniscient and I'm nipotent worked through all of them to bring out this amazing outcome and Joseph has that perspective. did, not that it was good, but God used that to save the lives of many people, millions of people were saved in the region because of what God did through the bad things that they did. 22:43.058 --> instead of dwelling on and rumenating on and holding on to bitterness over that, if we can shift away from their intention to God's purpose, then we say, God, what are you doing through this? 25:06.769 [SPEAKER_01]: I've talked with so many of you who have gone through seasons of life like this, where you faced extreme disappointment and discouragement, and you've had that mindset. 25:07.019 --> 25:11.885 [SPEAKER_01]: Where you say, I don't know what God's doing, this isn't fun, but I'm sure He's got something for me in all of this. 25:11.905 --> 25:15.649 [SPEAKER_01]: That's the kind of thing I'm talking about, moving from there and tension to His purpose. 25:16.350 --> 25:25.861 [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you've got someone in your life that has betrayed your trust in some way, and you think, this is so unfair, and it's wrong that they've done this to me, and you know what, you're probably right, it is wrong. 25:26.482 --> 25:34.832 [SPEAKER_01]: But the greatest demonstration of grace that you can give is to shift from there and tension, which may be bad to God's purpose and say, God, are you trying to teach me to rely on you? 25:35.369 --> 25:38.373 [SPEAKER_01]: Are you trying to teach me to not depend on them instead of you? 25:38.473 --> 25:46.004 [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe this was not a healthy relationship or maybe there's something else you're trying to teach me and grow me through this you move from their intention to God's purpose. 25:46.805 --> 25:50.089 [SPEAKER_01]: That's the greatest demonstration of grace that you can offer. [SPEAKER_01]: So go to verse 22 with me. 25:59.122 --> 26:04.549 [SPEAKER_01]: The last section, the last bit of this amazing book of the Bible that we've gone through together this year. 26:05.643 --> 26:10.917 [SPEAKER_01]: So Joseph and his brothers and their families continued to live in the Egypt. 26:15.610 --> 26:17.214 [SPEAKER_01]: Joseph lived to the age of 110. 26:17.315 --> 26:21.205 [SPEAKER_01]: Not bad, it's not Jacob levels, but not bad. 26:22.400 --> 26:30.377 [SPEAKER_01]: He lived to see three generations of descendants of his son Ephraim, and he lived to see the birth of the children of Minassus son Makir, whom he claimed as his own. 26:30.959 --> 26:37.152 [SPEAKER_01]: So 110 years, he became second and command at 30, so that's 80 years if you're a math guy. 26:37.385 --> 26:47.721 [SPEAKER_01]: And that's 80 years of being in this prominent position, not that he held on to it for his entire life, but being a very successful prosperous position within the area of Egypt. 26:47.821 --> 26:53.871 [SPEAKER_01]: And in that time, he got to see his grandchildren and his great grandchildren, and even his great-great grandchildren. 26:54.151 --> 26:58.498 [SPEAKER_01]: And the reason this is communicated to us is, this is a big deal for us today, but for 26:58.478 --> 27:04.004 [SPEAKER_01]: for a Hebrew culture, this was like the way of saying an incredibly rewarding fulfilling life. 27:04.545 --> 27:13.235 [SPEAKER_01]: He got to see three generations of his grandchildren through his sons, an incredibly rewarding, satisfying life. 27:13.615 --> 27:20.403 [SPEAKER_01]: But even at the end of it all, he's not looking back, he's looking forward. 27:20.863 --> 27:28.452 [SPEAKER_01]: He's looking forward for his people, forward for what God has next, even as he is about to die. 27:28.651 --> 27:37.466 [SPEAKER_01]: Soon I will die, Joseph told his brothers, but God will surely come to help you and lead you out of this land of Egypt. 27:37.486 --> 27:43.437 [SPEAKER_01]: He will bring you back to the land he solemnly promised to give to Abraham to Isaac and to Jacob. 27:44.078 --> 27:51.030 [SPEAKER_01]: Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear and oath, and he said, when God comes to help you and lead you back, 27:51.230 --> 27:54.093 [SPEAKER_01]: You must take my bones with you. 27:54.113 --> 27:59.339 [SPEAKER_01]: He was nice enough to not say you have to go ahead and make that journey again like we did for Jacob a long time ago. 27:59.599 --> 28:00.761 [SPEAKER_01]: No, no, you can go ahead and bury me here. 28:00.781 --> 28:07.008 [SPEAKER_01]: But when you leave, when God comes to help you and take you out, take my bones with you. 28:07.088 --> 28:09.370 [SPEAKER_01]: So Joseph died at the age of 110. 28:09.510 --> 28:15.237 [SPEAKER_01]: The Egyptians embalmed him and his body was placed in a coffin in Egypt. 28:15.297 --> 28:20.022 [SPEAKER_01]: Now there are two things that I want to point out about this passage. 28:21.385 --> 28:29.726 [SPEAKER_01]: is that it seems like Joseph already had a clue that things were turning in the minds of the Egyptians toward them. 28:30.569 --> 28:37.386 [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe there were already hints and seeds of resentment because he says at some point, God's gonna come and help you and he's gonna get you out of here. 28:38.243 --> 29:00.336 [SPEAKER_01]: And it seems like maybe there's just a little hint there of okay things are starting to unravel a little bit and Joseph sees that he is the last major link between this incredible salvation of the people from starvation during the famine and the children of Israel that are there and so there's already maybe a riff that's beginning to form and we will see that continue in the book 29:00.316 --> 29:01.077 [SPEAKER_01]: of accidents. 29:01.137 --> 29:11.393 [SPEAKER_01]: If you read that, you'll see how Moses goes into detail about the resentment that shows up because the Israelites have become strong in number and they're very prominent and now the Egyptians are worried about that. 29:11.794 --> 29:15.780 [SPEAKER_01]: And that's why before they get too big, they enslave them and they oppress them. 29:16.221 --> 29:20.968 [SPEAKER_01]: It seems like maybe Joseph could kind of see a little bit of that starting to happen in the cracks beginning to form. 29:22.050 --> 29:28.720 [SPEAKER_01]: But the other thing that we see about this 29:30.438 --> 29:38.045 [SPEAKER_01]: has the same faith that Jacob did that God is about to do something miraculous for his people. 29:38.065 --> 29:47.114 [SPEAKER_01]: He trusts, he believes with all his heart, that at one point, at some time, after this period of trouble, God is going to come back and he's going to help them, and he's going to get them out of this place. 29:47.134 --> 29:49.836 [SPEAKER_01]: And he's going to lead them back to the land that God promised them. 29:49.876 --> 29:52.078 that after a period of struggle, there will be this rebuilding that happens in the home that God has for them. 30:09.224 --> 30:21.825 [SPEAKER_01]: And that hope for rebuilding and restoration after a struggle then becomes a cycle a pattern that exists through that nation of Israel for their continued existence. 30:22.919 --> 30:25.423 [SPEAKER_01]: It happens over and over and over again. 30:25.944 --> 30:35.579 [SPEAKER_01]: Moses leads the rebuilding as a nation, as a cohesive people out in the wilderness and the building of the tabernacle, as a place for them to gather and worship God. 30:35.940 --> 30:42.009 [SPEAKER_01]: Ezra, then a long time later after another struggle, leads the rebuilding of the temple, Nehemiah leads the rebuilding of the walls. 30:42.270 --> 30:46.817 [SPEAKER_01]: King Asa leads the rebuilding of the altar of the Lord at the temple after a struggle. 30:46.797 --> 30:53.387 [SPEAKER_01]: King Hezekiah leads the physical renovation and the spiritual restoration of the temple as a place of worship for the people. 30:53.447 --> 31:01.819 [SPEAKER_01]: And so every time there's this struggle that happens, there's a fresh commitment to God, and then there's some physical demonstration of that commitment that occurs. 31:02.400 --> 31:12.214 [SPEAKER_01]: Some kind of rebuilding that happens and that reinvigorates the people to say, okay, it often
