05:26.302 --> 05:33.314 [SPEAKER_00]: It's like well, you can just you know Higher a lawyer and get out of it whenever you want, but that's not what marriage is supposed to be. 05:33.354 --> 05:35.678 [SPEAKER_00]: It's a covenant relationship where you 05:35.658 --> 05:38.744 [SPEAKER_00]: are giving of yourself to this relationship. 05:38.764 --> 05:41.629 [SPEAKER_00]: And now, a covenant with God is much the same way. 05:41.649 --> 05:47.721 [SPEAKER_00]: And we'll explain more, but it's very important to note that covenant is not the same as a contract. 05:47.761 --> 05:50.086 [SPEAKER_00]: It's not the same as just friendship. 05:50.166 --> 05:54.073 [SPEAKER_00]: Like, it's a serious, serious deal. 05:54.093 --> 05:57.700 [SPEAKER_00]: And so let's just go to verse one of chapter 24. 05:58.557 --> 06:10.573 [SPEAKER_00]: says, then he said to Moses, this is God speaking, he says, come up to the Lord, you and Aaron, Nadev, Abahoo, and 70 of the elders of Israel, and worship from afar. 06:11.514 --> 06:18.243 [SPEAKER_00]: Moses alone shall come near to the Lord, but the others shall not come near, and the people shall not come up with them. 06:18.984 --> 06:20.506 [SPEAKER_00]: So this scene opens up, right? 06:20.547 --> 06:24.632 [SPEAKER_00]: God's given them his word, his law. 06:25.321 --> 06:29.206 [SPEAKER_00]: And now this scene chapter opens up with an invitation. 06:29.867 --> 06:38.198 [SPEAKER_00]: I says, hey, tell us, Moses, come near you, the leaders of Israel, come up, and he says, some specific and worship. 06:39.019 --> 06:40.080 [SPEAKER_00]: Right, come up and worship. 06:40.100 --> 06:49.472 [SPEAKER_00]: The word worship would mean to bow down and honor and reverence and fear even, and it's to come and just, just in awe. 06:49.570 --> 06:51.813 [SPEAKER_00]: Essentially, but then he says something interesting. 06:51.873 --> 06:56.859 [SPEAKER_00]: He says, come up and worship from afar, which is interesting, isn't it? 07:47.418 --> 07:48.200 [SPEAKER_00]: Do you see that? 07:48.220 --> 07:51.606 [SPEAKER_00]: And so there's people out there, though. 07:51.586 --> 08:11.192 [SPEAKER_00]: Religious people who will try to uphold the law, and I'll try to make themselves look good and holy and just, and that's really what the Pharisees were in the New Testament days, is that they looked good on the outside, because they tried to do all the right things, say all the right things, but inwardly, Jesus tells them that you're white wash tombs. 08:11.653 --> 08:19.804 [SPEAKER_00]: You look really great outside, you got it all together, performance is excellent, but your heart is so far from me, is what he's saying. 08:19.784 --> 08:27.373 [SPEAKER_00]: So the law, it's meant to show us God-standard, and it's meant to show us that we don't meet that standard. 08:27.393 --> 08:35.061 [SPEAKER_00]: Like looking into a mirror, right when you look into the mirror, you can see if I had hair, oh man, my hair needs to be done today, right? 08:35.121 --> 08:37.905 [SPEAKER_00]: I don't have that problem, but some of you understand probably. 08:38.425 --> 08:48.897 [SPEAKER_00]: But you look into a mirror, or imagine just even driving on Texas streets and highways, it's like if there was no speed limit sign, how would you know if you're speeding? 09:03.150 --> 09:12.326 [SPEAKER_00]: But in this instance, right, God's calling them close or, hey, come up to the mountain, you and the elders, but keep your distance a bit, but come here to worship. 09:12.646 --> 09:18.917 [SPEAKER_00]: And in this instance, Moses alone, which is interesting, but he's invited to come near. 09:18.897 --> 09:20.901 [SPEAKER_00]: And why is Moses the special guy? 09:29.197 --> 09:31.501 [SPEAKER_00]: But we can look at all kinds of people in the Bible, right? 09:31.522 --> 09:37.834 [SPEAKER_00]: I want to be like King David, and I want to cut off the head of Goliath, and have cool crazy stories like that. 09:37.894 --> 09:41.040 [SPEAKER_00]: But the truth of the matter is, most of us, 09:41.155 --> 09:45.655 [SPEAKER_00]: We're not in the Moses' David category. 09:46.198 --> 09:47.705 [SPEAKER_00]: We just need to be faithful servants. 09:47.725 --> 09:50.035 [SPEAKER_00]: And then so God has called Moses. 09:50.437 --> 09:56.983 [SPEAKER_00]: He's invited him to come near and the thing we need to remember is Moses is a picture of Jesus. 09:57.643 --> 09:59.024 [SPEAKER_00]: Moses is not Jesus. 09:59.405 --> 10:03.889 [SPEAKER_00]: He's not someone we should worship or put on a pedestal and say, Moses is so great. 10:03.949 --> 10:09.093 [SPEAKER_00]: I could never be that right and we put him up there with Jesus and all the other saints or something. 10:09.253 --> 10:09.774 [SPEAKER_00]: We don't do that. 10:09.834 --> 10:11.115 [SPEAKER_00]: Jesus stands alone. 10:11.215 --> 10:19.482 [SPEAKER_00]: Moses is a picture of Jesus, our great mediator and so Moses is the mediator. 10:19.462 --> 10:22.887 [SPEAKER_00]: and the Holy God, one and only God. 10:23.288 --> 10:25.552 [SPEAKER_00]: And so that's what we see in this picture. 10:26.213 --> 10:35.327 [SPEAKER_00]: And the heartbeat of this covenant relationship that we'll unpack here is that we gotta understand that we can't approach God on our own terms. 10:36.050 --> 10:44.202 [SPEAKER_00]: God sets the terms, and here's the truth of the matter is we, just like they do, we need a mediator between us and God. 10:44.903 --> 10:48.688 [SPEAKER_00]: Someone who can bridge the gap, and that's what makes again, it points to Jesus. 10:48.749 --> 10:51.993 [SPEAKER_00]: It's so beautiful, powerful, right? 11:11.378 --> 11:18.527 [SPEAKER_00]: He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance. 11:18.507 --> 11:24.654 [SPEAKER_00]: Since the death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions, committed under the first covenant. 11:25.394 --> 11:29.899 [SPEAKER_00]: And so Moses is called up there to be this mediator between God and man. 11:30.580 --> 11:37.448 [SPEAKER_00]: Moses goes up to the mountain to hear from God, verse 3. 11:39.270 --> 11:44.295 [SPEAKER_00]: Moses came, told the people all the words of the Lord, and all the rules. 11:44.444 --> 11:50.353 [SPEAKER_00]: And all the people answered with one voice and said, all the words that the Lord has spoken we will do. 11:50.873 --> 11:53.035 [SPEAKER_00]: And Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord. 11:53.075 --> 12:01.344 [SPEAKER_00]: He rose early in the morning, and built an altar at the foot of the mountain and 12 pillars according to the 12 tribes of Israel. 12:02.145 --> 12:09.413 [SPEAKER_00]: He sent young men of the people of Israel who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen to the Lord. 12:09.914 --> 12:15.480 [SPEAKER_00]: And Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins and half of the blood he threw against the altar. 12:15.460 --> 12:32.545 [SPEAKER_00]: Then he took the book of the covenant and read it in the hearing of the people and they said, all that the Lord has spoken we will do and we will be obedient and Moses took the blood and threw it on the people and said, behold, the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you and accordance with all these words. 12:32.606 --> 12:39.095 [SPEAKER_00]: Now this is an interesting scene and some of you are probably like that's kind of gross, it's kind of messy, right? 12:39.235 --> 12:40.337 [SPEAKER_00]: And it is. 12:40.705 --> 12:42.889 [SPEAKER_00]: But this is a covenant moment, right? 12:42.929 --> 12:55.350 [SPEAKER_00]: God has spoken, he's told them, and what he expects, what he wants, what he desires, the people have responded, everything that God says we will do will be obedient, right? 12:55.651 --> 13:02.983 [SPEAKER_00]: And I believe they probably meant it in that moment, but we know not long from now they're gonna forget about this. 13:02.963 --> 13:15.856 [SPEAKER_00]: Right, one of the first commandments, you should have no other gods before me, and then a few chapters, you're going to see that the Aaron and her, they're left in charge, and they let them make a gold calf to worship and dance around, right? 13:15.876 --> 13:18.759 [SPEAKER_00]: It's like, wait a second, guys, you've already forgotten? 13:18.799 --> 13:30.912 [SPEAKER_00]: So we know they're going to break this eventually, but that only makes the covenant, I think, that much more powerful, because God knows everything. 13:31.415 --> 13:40.159 [SPEAKER_00]: God knew that in a few weeks, days that they're going to go right back to where should be in false idle. 13:40.358 --> 14:00.297 [SPEAKER_00]: And here's the thing is that God knows each and every one of us and when He's called us unto Himself, He knows that you're going to go run back to the thing that He's freed you from, or you're going to slip into this different sand, or you're going to treat someone wrong, and you're going to do something that breaks his law, that brings, I mean, it's unholy, essentially. 14:01.298 --> 14:07.024 [SPEAKER_00]: But I think it's so powerful that even though God knows all these things, He still calls us into this covenant relationship. 14:07.848 --> 14:11.493 [SPEAKER_00]: And that's the power and the beauty of a covenant relationship. 14:11.533 --> 14:24.890 [SPEAKER_00]: You think of again a marriage, and if you had like a traditional wedding with traditional vows, you say, you know, in sickness and in health, for rich or poor, till death through us part. 14:25.571 --> 14:30.177 [SPEAKER_00]: And so what you're saying is, whatever happens, I'm in this. 14:31.220 --> 14:35.366 [SPEAKER_00]: Like if we're a rock bottom living in intent, I'm gonna be with you, right?
