can't imagine the pain, the deep wounds of being sold like property by the very people who shared his blood. 02:33.126 --> 02:36.010 [SPEAKER_00]: He had to have a deep portrayal, a deep wound. in this kind of a moment in which God humbles him and strips him of everything and a position where he has no control, he has no rights and he has no say in what's happening. 03:27.104 --> 03:29.027 would, if you want to open your Bibles or your Bible App to Genesis, chapter 39, verses 1 through 6, it says this. 07:23.628 --> 07:31.057 [SPEAKER_00]: So when Joseph was taken to Egypt by the Ishmael-Ige traders, he was purchased by Potifer, an Egyptian officer. 07:31.778 --> 07:36.042 [SPEAKER_00]: And Potifer was a captain of the guard for Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. 07:37.224 --> 07:40.047 [SPEAKER_00]: Verse 2, it says this, that the Lord was what? 07:40.718 --> 07:41.879 [SPEAKER_00]: He was with Joseph. 07:42.520 --> 07:46.725 [SPEAKER_00]: So he succeeded in everything he did as he served the home of the Egyptian master. 07:47.346 --> 07:53.693 [SPEAKER_00]: And Potter for notice this and realized that the Lord was with Joseph, giving him success and everything he did. 07:53.753 --> 07:57.837 [SPEAKER_00]: And this pleased Potter for, so he soon made Joseph his personal attendant. 07:58.358 --> 08:02.743 [SPEAKER_00]: He made him a charge of his entire household and everything he owned. 08:02.723 --> 08:13.376 [SPEAKER_00]: And from that day, Joseph was put in charge of his master's household and property, and the Lord began to bless potifers household for Joseph's sake. 08:14.377 --> 08:21.245 [SPEAKER_00]: You see, all of his household affairs ran smoothly, and all of his crops in livestock's flourish, so potifermane, Joseph won. 08:22.546 --> 08:28.073 [SPEAKER_00]: Complete and administrative responsibility over everything he owned. 08:28.542 --> 08:34.273 [SPEAKER_00]: With Joseph there, he didn't have to worry about a thing, except what fact, the Hebrew word translated for success is also something that we can say is advancement. 08:48.526 --> 08:53.011 [SPEAKER_00]: It's moving toward something or a progress through resistance. chapter in many ways. 09:08.975 --> 09:16.587 [SPEAKER_00]: That the chapter kind of just reminds us, and we'll do it the beginning and the end, it says that the Lord was with Joseph. 09:17.869 --> 09:19.311 [SPEAKER_00]: And I don't think he wants us to miss that. 09:20.213 --> 09:30.088 [SPEAKER_00]: It's as if Joseph's story isn't about luck in talent and personality, but actually about God's presence and character, that everywhere Joseph went God went with him, 09:31.300 --> 09:39.411 [SPEAKER_00]: Don't you ever imagine that moment, Joseph, a teenager in a strange land, his wrists probably scarred from the very ropes and bound him. 09:39.831 --> 09:47.942 [SPEAKER_00]: And here he is, he's standing in the courtyard of Potifers' state, how skilled with idols to false gods, he doesn't believe in. 09:48.242 --> 09:53.449 [SPEAKER_00]: It's surrounded by people who don't speak his language, giving orders, he doesn't understand. 09:53.469 --> 09:56.633 [SPEAKER_00]: He has no family, no freedom, no reason. 09:56.613 --> 10:05.430 [SPEAKER_00]: for hope and yet somehow, some way, the presence of God is still with Him. 10:05.450 --> 10:11.883 [SPEAKER_00]: And this is, and because God was with Him, Joseph's work began to bless everyone around him. 10:11.903 --> 10:13.206 [SPEAKER_00]: And see, Potterford could see it. 10:13.506 --> 10:16.332 [SPEAKER_00]: And though he his household ran smoother, his field produced more. 10:23.057 --> 10:30.267 [SPEAKER_00]: He ended up tasking Joseph with more and more and everything he did, he just continued to knock it out of the park. 10:31.268 --> 10:32.490 [SPEAKER_00]: This was the favor of God. 10:33.692 --> 10:40.601 [SPEAKER_00]: And you see, Potterford didn't have the language for it, but the scriptures say that he realized the Lord was with Joseph. 10:40.621 --> 10:44.526 [SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't a conversion moment for Potterford, but it wasn't an acknowledgement. 10:45.067 --> 10:49.333 [SPEAKER_00]: There was the first things that people often will notice for us as a witness is actually our character. 11:01.018 --> 11:07.693 [SPEAKER_00]: Because sometimes before people can ever hear the words about the gospel for me and I, they see it live down in our lives. 11:07.893 --> 11:22.287 [SPEAKER_00]: This is if the presence of God would be, that is within us, would produce this kind of excellence and integrity and character and peace and an anxious world that we cannot ignore even if they don't understand it. 11:22.307 --> 11:25.290 [SPEAKER_00]: You see, Joseph Spatez, one of his gave him an incredible reputation. 11:26.331 --> 11:30.034 [SPEAKER_00]: A man who walked with God, who worked hard and got things done. 11:30.054 --> 11:36.921 [SPEAKER_00]: And so he rose from a nameless slave to an overseer, 11:38.133 --> 11:42.181 [SPEAKER_00]: Talk about a long way from the same sister that we left him in in the last chapter. 11:43.444 --> 11:50.999 [SPEAKER_00]: And yet it's here, it's in our victories and our comforts that temptation often will set the stage, not necessarily in our sufferings. 11:51.881 --> 11:58.234 [SPEAKER_00]: His character earned him trust, but that same character was about to be tested in the most personal way possible. 11:59.092 --> 12:09.883 [SPEAKER_00]: They see it because before character is built and it's tested, Joseph was about to come straight or sorry, was about to have a battle that was coming straight for the very integrity God had been forming within him. 12:11.004 --> 12:20.954 [SPEAKER_00]: I think for each of us today, we need to hear this truth as we read God's scripture, which is this is that for you and I as people of character, character has strategy. 12:22.416 --> 12:24.458 [SPEAKER_00]: Character has a strategy. Joseph refused, look, he told her, my what? 12:49.193 --> 12:53.360 [SPEAKER_00]: My master, he trust me with everything it is entire household. 12:53.780 --> 12:56.465 [SPEAKER_00]: No one here has he refused to sleep with her, and he kept out of her way as much as possible. 13:19.612 --> 13:29.702 [SPEAKER_00]: And one day, however, no one else was around when he went into his work and she came a problem. 13:57.293 --> 14:07.328 [SPEAKER_00]: And so here we have Potter for his wife, this powerful, persuasive, important woman who's probably used to getting whatever she wants has now set her eyes on Joseph. 14:08.168 --> 14:12.293 [SPEAKER_00]: And it starts with maybe a look that a word, and then a demand. 14:13.415 --> 14:17.199 [SPEAKER_00]: And right there here, we're reminded that temptation doesn't always come when we're weak. 14:18.121 --> 14:25.830 [SPEAKER_00]: If anything, I found that more often than not, it can happen when we're winning and we're successful and things that won't let go. 15:07.330 --> 15:11.335 [SPEAKER_00]: Y'all Joseph had a strategy to avoid her daily. 15:11.315 --> 15:15.139 [SPEAKER_00]: He created distance before desire could ever take root in his art. 15:15.720 --> 15:19.665 [SPEAKER_00]: And that's because holiness was never about managing temptation for him. 15:19.705 --> 15:22.488 [SPEAKER_00]: It was about fleeing it entirely, church. 15:23.249 --> 15:27.554 [SPEAKER_00]: See Joseph didn't wait until the moment of decision to figure out what he was going to do. 15:28.455 --> 15:34.602 [SPEAKER_00]: He because of his character had already made up the choice long before temptation had ever shown up. 15:34.622 --> 15:37.525 [SPEAKER_00]: And that's what strategy looks like for you and I. 15:38.129 --> 15:49.966 [SPEAKER_00]: In fact, one of the pastors that I've read over the years says it like this, Pastor Craig Rachelle says, hey, a temptation I can eliminate today is a battle I don't have to fight tomorrow. 15:51.728 --> 15:57.216 [SPEAKER_00]: Why would you battle a temptation in the future if you have the power to eliminate it today? 16:00.281 --> 16:02.444 [SPEAKER_00]: Church, how often are we fighting temptation? 16:17.229 [SPEAKER_00]: We call it harmless, though it's whispering to our hearts to healing. 16:17.249 --> 16:20.993 [SPEAKER_00]: How often do we entertain that temptation with the guy is a fighting it? 16:21.434 --> 16:30.224 [SPEAKER_00]: And in the truth is, I believe we often have such a tendency to downplay the danger of temptations in our life until the tiger is in our living room. 16:30.245 --> 16:36.452 [SPEAKER_00]: It is no longer a baby tiger, but a full grown thing ready to grow up and devour you in me. 16:37.394 --> 16:44.909 [SPEAKER_00]: Church, the truth is, as we are 100% vulnerable to temptation and sin, every one of us. 16:45.771 --> 16:52.885 [SPEAKER_00]: I want to say it again, so none of us miss it, that you and I, we are all 100% vulnerable to temptation says, run, don't reason, don't negotiate, don't fight, don't linger, run. 17:36.598 --> 17:40.804 [SPEAKER_00]: He says, you don't have to stop temptation from knocking. 17:40.885 --> 17:51.180 [SPEAKER_00]: In fact, I think we all know, like a bad salesman who won't go away, we probably can't prevent temptation ever from knocking, but we don't have to answer the door. 17:51.200 --> and the temple was torn, the distance between God and man collapsing, the presence, the same one that raised Jesus from a grave is still with Joseph and you and me and everyone who calls upon the name
