would tell him, my younger self, that prayer is way more important than he thinks it is. 02:25.605 --> 02:28.309 [SPEAKER_00]: I imagine many of the room have that kind of relationship to prayer. [SPEAKER_00]: Everybody knows that. 04:32.385 --> 04:42.202 [SPEAKER_00]: And what it exposes when I hear things like that and I'm honest about my reaction to it, it's some, I believe being productive prayer because even if I don't feel as faithful in it as I should, and maybe you don't either, it is essential to life with Jesus and it's essential to becoming like Jesus. 05:14.528 --> 05:14.788 when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases if the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words, do not be like them, for your father knows what you need before you ask So prayer for them is monologue in front of an audience. 06:30.614 --> 06:32.817 [SPEAKER_00]: It's never dialogue and secret with God. 06:33.556 --> 06:35.599 [SPEAKER_00]: And Jesus offers the is a specific room of the house. 06:43.549 --> 06:45.351 [SPEAKER_00]: It's the innermost room of the house. 06:46.032 --> 06:50.518 [SPEAKER_00]: And in most first century homes, it was the store room where you kept supplies and food and all that. 06:50.918 --> 06:57.066 [SPEAKER_00]: What was significant is that in most homes, the innermost room was the only room with a lock on it. 06:57.434 --> 07:04.304 [SPEAKER_00]: Jesus is saying, get alone in the one place where nobody will bug you, get alone where you can have uninterrupted time with God. 07:04.405 --> 07:12.437 [SPEAKER_00]: Frederick Bruner wrote a commentary on Matthew, and he says, using the word inner room would have made Jesus' original audience think of the Holy of Holies in the Temple. 07:12.958 --> 07:19.668 [SPEAKER_00]: And Jesus is implying that when we pray to God alone, we have temple like access to God. 07:19.828 --> 07:20.529 [SPEAKER_00]: He says it like this. 07:21.030 --> 07:22.412 [SPEAKER_00]: In a single sentence, 07:22.932 --> 07:26.237 [SPEAKER_00]: Jesus revises the whole Old Testament cultists. 07:26.257 --> 07:30.263 [SPEAKER_00]: It is no longer the Holy of Holy's that's a special meeting place between God and the believer. 07:30.323 --> 07:32.967 [SPEAKER_00]: It's the room with a lock. 07:32.987 --> 07:36.252 [SPEAKER_00]: So when you pray like a hypocrite, you get people's that they prayed was they multiplied their words because they did not know what their gods wanted. 07:53.884 --> 07:58.010 [SPEAKER_00]: Their gods were impetuous and temperamental and they changed talking, if I just keep stacking words on words on words, I will say something that pleases my god and then my god will respond. 08:09.946 --> 08:10.587 [SPEAKER_00]: to my prayer. 08:10.767 --> 08:18.735 [SPEAKER_00]: It's like in first kings, when Elijah is on Mount Carmel and there's 450 prophets of Baal and they're asking their God to respond. 08:18.775 --> 08:20.857 [SPEAKER_00]: It's this test of which God's the one true God. 08:21.337 --> 08:29.045 [SPEAKER_00]: And for morning till evening, the 450 prophets of Baal just prayed and prayed and prayed and nothing happened. 08:29.645 --> 08:34.850 [SPEAKER_00]: And so then they prayed more and they rambled and they rage and they cut themselves and Baal was silent. 08:35.451 --> 08:37.573 [SPEAKER_00]: And then Elijah steps up. 08:37.857 --> 08:44.188 [SPEAKER_00]: and praise a two-verse prayer to the God that has revealed Himself, the one true God in God response. 08:44.669 --> 08:47.674 [SPEAKER_00]: Jesus is saying here, don't multiply words like the Gentiles. 08:48.135 --> 08:50.218 [SPEAKER_00]: Don't multiply words like the prophets of Baal. 08:51.100 --> 08:55.828 [SPEAKER_00]: As if you don't know knowledge. 09:04.121 --> 09:14.813 [SPEAKER_00]: So they pray and pray and pray and maybe they pray in secret and maybe they pray out loud, but it doesn't matter because their prayers have no prayers other than the applause of people. 09:33.475 --> 09:38.742 [SPEAKER_00]: Their relationship with God is like a travel agent selling trips to places they themselves have never been. 09:38.782 --> 09:44.550 [SPEAKER_00]: And so following Jesus, we know this, following Jesus is about both knowledge, 09:44.733 --> 09:52.363 [SPEAKER_00]: and experience, truth about God and encounter with God, theology eventually leads to heresy. 10:02.897 --> 10:06.101 [SPEAKER_00]: Theology without experience often results in hypocrisy. 10:06.862 --> 10:12.529 [SPEAKER_00]: Prayer though is the key that turns theology into experience. 10:12.880 --> 10:18.007 [SPEAKER_00]: Christianity that lacks a real encounter with God will eventually be no Christianity at all. 10:18.969 --> 10:24.176 [SPEAKER_00]: We need theology and experience, experience that is theological and theology that is experiential. 10:24.236 --> 10:26.319 [SPEAKER_00]: What God is doing together, let no one separate. 10:27.361 --> And if he made it through the training, he would make lots of money, at least you'd make lots of money for a poor Bible college student. 11:19.521 --> 11:23.905 [SPEAKER_00]: And training was weeks and weeks and weeks and weeks and he would come home with the menu and he would study the menu. 11:24.485 --> 11:32.913 [SPEAKER_00]: Because they wanted their readers to be able to just know off the top of their head, what was on the menu and then he would study cuts of meat and where those cuts of meat came from and all that. 11:33.173 --> 11:38.338 [SPEAKER_00]: And he came home one night after work and I said, how is work? 11:39.263 --> 11:45.729 [SPEAKER_00]: He was the end of his training, and what the restaurant does for workers at the end of their training is they serve them dinner. 11:46.489 --> 11:57.979 [SPEAKER_00]: They sit them at the table, and then other staff come and serve them, and they order from memory what they know is on the menu, and they can order whatever they want, and there's no limit. 11:58.620 --> 12:04.284 [SPEAKER_00]: And my buddy went for it, like ordered in order to order, and when he came home, he's miserable. 12:04.585 --> 12:08.528 [SPEAKER_00]: He could barely sit down and he ate so much. 12:08.508 --> 12:10.031 [SPEAKER_00]: the waiters to know how good the food is. 12:11.654 --> 12:22.855 [SPEAKER_00]: All that in that moment when he sits down at the table and he orders from memory, all that he knew about the menu became experience when he sat down and ate the meal. 12:24.619 --> 12:26.803 [SPEAKER_00]: And we don't want to be Christians who don't know the menu. 12:27.475 --> 12:35.166 [SPEAKER_00]: The heart cannot love what the mind doesn't know, but we also don't want to be Christians who never eat the meal. 12:36.048 experienced God most intimately as the God man. 13:23.297 --> 13:29.085 [SPEAKER_00]: And so he teaches us to praise saying, when you talk to the God that you know, these are the things that you [SPEAKER_00]: It's the largest concentration of references to God as Father in the entire New Testament. 14:34.208 --> 14:41.080 [SPEAKER_00]: And Jesus, when He calls God Father, when He teaches us a book on the Trinity called Delighting in the Trinity. 14:54.659 --> 14:55.520 [SPEAKER_00]: It's exceptional. 14:56.021 --> 14:57.243 [SPEAKER_00]: And I've used this quote a few times. 14:57.303 --> 14:58.304 [SPEAKER_00]: It's just worth our time again. 14:58.324 --> 15:04.893 [SPEAKER_00]: He says this, God has revealed himself to be, not first and foremost creator or ruler, but father. 15:06.395 --> 15:11.301 [SPEAKER_00]: Perhaps the way to appreciate this best is to ask what God was doing before creation. 15:11.821 --> 15:19.170 [SPEAKER_00]: Jesus tells us explicitly in John 1724, Father, he says, you loved me before the creation of the world. 15:19.430 --> 15:29.623 [SPEAKER_00]: And that is the God revealed by Jesus Christ before he ever created, before he ever ruled the world, before anything else, this God was a father loving his son. 15:29.643 --> 15:39.415 [SPEAKER_00]: The most foundational thing in God is not some abstract quality, but the fact that he is
