how to make disciples. 04:03.879 --> 04:12.626 [SPEAKER_00]: One of the definitions of a disciple that I found really helpful, mainly because it's really simple, and I can remember it, is from a guy called John Mark Koma. 04:12.746 --> 04:13.907 [SPEAKER_00]: Some of you would know him. 04:13.967 --> 04:16.408 [SPEAKER_00]: He wrote a book called Practicing the Way. 04:17.309 --> 04:22.934 [SPEAKER_00]: And in his book he talks about becoming an apprentice of Jesus or becoming a disciple of Jesus. 04:23.355 --> 04:29.380 [SPEAKER_00]: And he says there's three main movements in the life of a disciple, or in the life of a apprentice. 04:30.181 --> 04:35.125 [SPEAKER_00]: Three main things that they need to do, they need to move towards. 04:35.406 --> 04:37.828 [SPEAKER_00]: The first [SPEAKER_00]: The early church doing the first thing that we're devoted to doing, it says in Acts is that they were devoted to prayer and to the apostles teaching. 05:56.330 --> 05:58.571 says is that the Cycles become like Jesus. 06:16.854 --> 06:22.096 [SPEAKER_00]: Another movement in their life is that they be with Him and out of that they become like Him. 06:23.496 --> 06:24.917 [SPEAKER_00]: This might happen for a few reasons. 06:24.977 --> 06:27.778 [SPEAKER_00]: Firstly, when you be with someone, generally they rub off on you. 06:29.319 --> 06:34.881 [SPEAKER_00]: If you've got a friend that you spend a lot of time with, you begin to see how they talk, you pick up some of their lingo. 06:36.117 --> 06:41.641 [SPEAKER_00]: You begin to see how they look at the world and that robs off on you as well, have they treat other people? 06:42.242 --> 06:43.903 [SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes that inspires you as well. 06:44.763 --> 06:49.907 [SPEAKER_00]: So these first disciples in being with Jesus, things began to rub off on them. 06:50.087 --> 06:53.470 [SPEAKER_00]: They began to become like Him, just start being with Him. 06:54.369 --> 07:00.673 [SPEAKER_00]: But also at times Jesus pointed out things in their life as well and challenged things in their life as well. 07:00.793 --> 07:06.196 [SPEAKER_00]: He put his finger on things and said, now that's an become more like him as well. 07:13.400 --> 07:21.685 [SPEAKER_00]: And even after he left, and through their prayer, through the apostles teaching, they became more like Jesus. 07:22.770 --> that John Mark came to say is that they begin to do as Jesus did. 07:36.713 --> 07:42.093 [SPEAKER_00]: And again, we see this in the life of the first disciples in Matthew chapter 10, I think it is. [SPEAKER_00]: After the great commission, he was no longer physically with him, but they continued to do these things. 08:09.576 --> 08:17.137 [SPEAKER_00]: And we actually see that they formed this [SPEAKER_00]: Decades of doing the things Jesus did. 11:19.001 --> 11:23.383 [SPEAKER_00]: And at the other end of the poor, we've got people who are right at the beginning of their journey. 11:23.543 heard stories of missionaries and was inspired by those stories. 13:16.067 --> 13:21.711 [SPEAKER_00]: He moved to Melbourne when he was about 17 to do a cadet ship at Maya to sell fridges. 13:21.831 drifted a little bit as he started to interact with the things in the big city, in the big smoke, until he got a ladder, and he got a ladder from his brother who was a missionary in New Guinea. 13:40.457 --> 13:47.359 [SPEAKER_00]: And his brother Ian wrote to dad and said, Jeff, you've got to get your life back on track. 13:47.379 --> 13:50.859 [SPEAKER_00]: You need to get serious about your faith, you are drifting. 13:51.740 --> 13:52.760 [SPEAKER_00]: He confronted dad. 13:53.770 --> 14:16.217 [SPEAKER_00]: And Dad felt convicted by this letter and he wrote in his story that I've decided to throw myself at Jesus, what a great term, and he said, I threw myself into prayer, I threw myself into reading the Bible, and I threw myself into my local church, and 14:17.321 --> love seeing people, particularly at the start of their journey, like Michael this morning, talk about coming to faith and how God has changed their life. 21:56.701 --> 21:58.503 [SPEAKER_00]: I love back to some previous experiences that I've had with evangelism, both being on the receiving end of it, some pushy evangelism, but also some times where I've tried to do evangelism that haven't really 23:06.451 --> 23:24.664 [SPEAKER_00]: And so I've got some kind of hangups with evangelism and some doubts, I guess, in the back of my mind, as to whether maybe I'm gifted enough, or whether I know similar sorts of experiences of it. 23:31.397 --> 23:43.125 [SPEAKER_00]: And as a church over history, I think we have outsourced evangelism a lot to the missionaries, to the evangelists, to the seems Philip did, because Philip was always listed as one of the twelve. 25:54.649 --> 25:57.791 [SPEAKER_00]: Philip, like Andrew and Peter, were from a town called Bethsideer. 25:59.352 --> 26:12.081 [SPEAKER_00]: Philip found the Thannyung and told him, we have found the one Moses wrote about in the law, about whom the prophets also wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. 26:14.163 has some doubts that anything good can come from then. 26:47.317 --> 26:56.724 [SPEAKER_00]: When Jesus saw in the manual approaching him, he said to him, of him, here truly is an Israelite in whom love this little story. 27:19.481 --> 27:21.883 [SPEAKER_00]: And there's a few things I think that we can pull out of it. 27:22.003 --> 27:27.226 [SPEAKER_00]: And I want to speak to both followers and to explore as this morning about this little passage. 27:27.966 --> 27:34.670 [SPEAKER_00]: The first thing I love about this passage is how spontaneous evangelism is. 27:35.331 --> 27:45.197 [SPEAKER_00]: You know, we build evangelism up to be something when we're training for, we need to pray about, we need to be gifted in, we need a strategy for, but for Philip, it's just a, 27:46.339 --> 27:47.900 [SPEAKER_00]: gut-impulsive reaction. 27:48.441 --> 27:54.546 [SPEAKER_00]: He finds Jesus, something he's been searching for, and he immediately goes and shares it with a friend. 27:55.127 --> 28:01.232 [SPEAKER_00]: Evangelism in this passage is simply inviting a friend to explore Jesus for themselves. 28:02.734 --> 28:04.815 [SPEAKER_00]: We do evangelism all the time. enthusiasm that Philip has and the confidence that he has that what he's sharing with Nathaniel is actually going to be good news for Nathaniel. 29:08.205 --> 29:11.806 [SPEAKER_00]: Philip and Nathaniel seem to have had a backstory. 29:13.607 --> 29:16.027 [SPEAKER_00]: Philip knows what Nathaniel's looking for. 29:16.787 --> 29:18.388 [SPEAKER_00]: They've talked about this in the past. 29:19.248 --> 29:22.549 [SPEAKER_00]: Philip knows that Nathaniel is longing for something. 29:24.430 --> 29:28.854 [SPEAKER_00]: Philip knows that Nathaniel is after some change, that he's restless. 29:30.195 --> 29:39.543 [SPEAKER_00]: And so when he finds the thing he knows and Nathaniel is looking for, he shares it knowing that Nathaniel is actually going to find this to be good news. be sharing with confidence that what we have is actually good news. 29:53.055 --> 29:59.396 [SPEAKER_00]: The second thing I think I've learnt from this is that we need to know what people around us people's doubts or questions. 31:17.401 --> 31:19.502 [SPEAKER_00]: We've literally just done eight weeks of that. 31:19.742 --> 31:23.624 [SPEAKER_00]: So this is a church where you can ask questions
