RESOLUTION NO. 470-13 [Adding the Name "Donaldina Cameron Alley" to Old Chinatown Lane]

Resolution adding the name "Donaldina Cameron Alley" to Old Chinatown Lane in recognition of Donaldina Cameron and her many contributions to San Francisco.

WHEREAS, Donaldina Cameron became the superintendent of the Presbyterian Home at the age of 25 and continued the mission of saving Chinese immigrant women from indentured servitude; and

WHEREAS, Donaldina Cameron created a foundation to help Asian women victims of discrimination and violence through her work with the Donaldina Cameron House; and

WHEREAS, The Cameron House has since developed into a comprehensive direct service agency that serves low income Asian immigrants in San Francisco; and

WHEREAS, Donaldina Cameron devoted her life to assisting women and families in San Francisco; and

WHEREAS, Donaldina Cameron was known to spend time on Old Chinatown Lane outreaching to girls in need of help; and

WHEREAS, Donaldina Cameron also founded the Chung Mei Home and the Ming Quong Home for orphaned children; and

WHEREAS, Donaldina Cameron retired from her work in 1934, and she is recognized for educating and saving over 3,000 Chinese women and children; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, There shall be an honorary naming of "Donaldina Cameron Alley" in recognition of her valued contributions to the City of San Francisco and the community of Chinatown; and, be it

FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Board of Supervisors requests the Municipal Transportation Agency to erect street signs indicating both the honorary and the existing

  1. 1  names of the street, either on a single sign or on separate signs, with the honorary name

  2. 2  "Donaldina Cameron Alley" in smaller letters, and the existing name "Old Chinatown Lane" in

  3. 3  larger letters above or beneath the honorary name; and, be it

  4. 4  FURTHER RESOLVED, That both of the street names, "Donaldina Cameron Alley" and

  5. 5  "Old Chinatown Lane," shall remain posted permanently; and, be it

  6. 6  FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Department of Public Works is directed to add the

  7. 7  honorary street name to its official list of Commemorative Street Names in accordance with

  8. 8  Public Works Code 789 et seq.
