The weather: Watch the cold front develop on Oct. 21 and reach the Texas coast on Oct. 22. Next, watch the high pressure cell reach northern Mexico on Oct. 23 and stay in place for 3 days. Those conditions brought north/northwest winds for 3 days along the coast on Oct. 23, Oct. 24 and Oct. 25. When the high pressure cell moved deeper into Mexico (off the map) on Oct. 26, the wind on the Texas Coast shifted to the south.

The monarchs: "The coastal flyway had its first players show up today," wrote Harlen Aschen from the mid-coast on Tuesday, Oct. 23. By Oct. 26th, reports of the massive migration appeared on the map from Houston to Corpus Christi, a distance of 200 miles. Monarchs were even reported 120 miles offshore on Oct. 25th, from an observer on a gas/oil platform.
